Housing for mid-year transfers

I just got accepted to transfer into Rice for January 2010.

I'm pretty excited but I'm a little worried about the housing situation. I'm in Missouri now and I won't know anybody at Rice (and in Houston) at first, so my top priority upon arriving will just be to get to know some people. Because of this I'd love to get in a dorm, but that's probably not likely for a mid-year transfer.

But I can't seem to find any info at all on how off-campus housing works for mid-year transfers. Is it basically left up to me to scramble for an apartment in Houston late December? I plan on talking to Rice about this in detail, but I thought it would be worth seeing if any Rice students here knew!

Thanks very much!

My DD (who was not a transfer student…) lived off-campus first semester one year then decided she wanted to move back on-campus. She was able to do so - I believe that more kids study abroad spring semester, which frees up housing. She also was able to find a place to stay only a few blocks from campus when she returned from a study-abroad the following year. Talk to Rice on Monday…

I did a little searching and found this: [Rice University O-Week: Undergraduates](<a href=“O-Week Schedule”>O-Week Schedule)

It’s unfortunate that you don’t get a whole O-Week like fall starting students, but an O-Weekend is a lot more than other schools offer.

As a Rice student, you will be assigned a residential college. So you will have an on campus connection even if you don’t get on campus housing.

Congratulations on your transfer acceptance.
