I got accepted about a month ago as a transfer student...
I would really like to live in the dorms so i can meet people, etc.
How exactly does the housing selection process work? What are my chances of getting in the dorms?
I talked to my aunt whose son already attends michigan and she said that there's a lottery drawing for housing..and that everyone gets a number 1-4 and 1's get first choice at where they stay..? is this true?
do freshman get priority over transfers so i can only get what's left after they've been assigned? if i get a 4 in the lottery, am i just out of luck at getting in the dorms? is there room for everyone in the dorms?

i just have no idea how it works and i'm stressing about it..haha i haven't gotten any information yet about housing sent so that's why i'm pretty clueless. and i've gone to the housing website but i can't find the information i'm looking for.
i want to be in a dorm so badly but i'm worried i won't be able too :(

I got into the dorms. You will get to list your top choice buildings and whether you want a double or a single. Then there is a lottery. I got into my second choice. I am sure my first choice was full well before I ever got to register. I don’t know how she’d know that the lottery is 1-4, I’ve never heard that before. I don’t think that’s right.

Worst comes to worse you’d probably end up at Northwood III, the on campus apartments. They are out of the way but I really like them.

I would like to know this as well. I am transferring from out of state and I know the best way to meet people is to live in the dorms. If it is done the way you described then that sucks hardcore :(

EDIT: Thanks Twisted Kiss. That helps alot. Another quick question though. How many upper classmen live on campus? Is it normal for an upper classmen to dorm with someone of a different grade level? I am transferring going to be a junior in the fall and I am just curious.

thanks for the replies!
twisted: i really don’t want to be on north campus …but i heard a lot of transfers are there.
i kinda want to be around where everything is within walking distance but oh well…lol
i’m just happy to be going to michigan so i guess i’ll take what i can get :)

wolfpack: i want to know how it works too! they said we’re supposed to get the housing stuff in march so hopefully it’s all explained there but it’s still stressing me out…

I was a junior and I was assigned with a freshman. If you are more on the mature side for your age I suggest trying to get a single room. I swear my roommate still thinks she’s in high school and it’s making me crazy.

The housing stuff should be relatively self explanatory when you get it, otherwise you can always call and ask questions to clarify.

If your female I suggest Martha Cook. As an upperclassman transfer it was really a great decision because I live with students from all years (including grads). Betsy Barbour and Helen Newberry are also great all female dorms with a very great sense of community. I think its only 30% freshman. I also suggest trying to get into North Quad, it is the brand new dorm opening up in the fall. If you are coming in as a sophomore, Stockwell might be a great choice because of the Sophomore year experience and its is almost all sophomores with a few juniors and seniors.

I chose to live in Newberry for next year, I am excited about it, it looks like it’d be a good place for transfers. That said, I lived in East Quad my first year and I did like it, besides the fact that my whole floor are freshman sorority girls.

twisted: did you find it strange to room w/ a freshman? i was thinking about this and figured it would be fine b/c i feel like i’ll be practically a freshman anyway b/c i’ll be new and not know anything but…idk.
west quad is my first choice in dorms but east quad is probably my second choice…is it easy to meet people there? are there people of all grade levels?

I did not enjoy living with a freshman. I don’t know if I am mature for my age or what, but her immaturity makes me crazy.

I think it’s as easy to meet people here as anywhere else, but I have heard the dorms in the hill neighborhood are more sociable than down here. There are people of all grade levels, but many upperclassmen do not live in university housing. I am the oldest person on my floor, there are two sophomores and all the rest are freshman.

twisted: sorry to bother you again! but would you say that there are more upperclassmen living on the hill than in like east or west quad?
just trying to figure everything out…haha

In my opinion there are more upperclassmen who reside in West Quad and East Quad than the hill which caters to freshman and sophomores predominantly. However, this margin is relatively small since most Juniors (including myself) and Seniors opt to live in off campus housing since it’s more affordable and prefer a new experience. Btw, just to let you know if anything you’ll find more upperclassmen in Northwood apartments on North Campus since it used to be an all uuperclassmen complex, until recently they included sophomores. Also, it’s quiet and that’s usually where they put the incoming transfer upperclassmen/underclassmen(sophomores).
