Housing form question

I know there are like 6 question on the housing form, but I’m having a bit of a moral dilemma.

3 asks: Can you sleep with background noise or a light on?

I can. I don’t know that I want to. But I feel like if I marked “no” to this question, I’d be obligated to never have music or a light on, or people in the room while my roommate was trying to sleep. Granted, I probably wouldn’t have music on if I knew she were trying to sleep.

My teacher said for $40,000/year, I should definitely check no. I would definitely feel bad subjecting my roommate to sleeping disruptions if she said that she did not want the lights on.

Any opinions?

I'm having this same conflict, and not just with that question. I go to sleep with music on every night, but I am uncomfortable if I'm trying to sleep with a light on or with others in the room.

The smoking question--I don't want a roommate to come in the room smelling like smoke all the time, but then I don't want to get a militant antismoker and be chastised for coming into our room smelling like smoke now and then.

I don't have the form in front of me at this moment, but I think I had a conflict like this with a few others.

I guess the best you can do is hope you get a respectful and tolerant roommate.

I also was thinking about the smoker question! Since they don't allow smoking in dorms, I really have no problem with rooming with a smoker, but everyone's telling me to definitely say no! However, I know I might possibly smoke on occasion. I just don't know...

I don't understand the last part, saying "Please call me by phone to discuss my housing assignment." Does checking that just tell Brown to call you and confirm what you get or something? Is it best to agree to that or no?

I thought that was if you need special housing, like disabilities or something, but it was sort of unclear.

Ok, I've compiled my issues:

1 Would you be willing to live with someone who smokes? Yes No
Brown University does not allow smoking in its residence halls or dining facilities.
If I check "yes": I'm afraid I'll be paired with a regular smoker who will always smell like smoke. If I check "no": I'm afraid I'll get a militant antismoker who will ***** at me any time I go out to smoke or smell the least bit like smoke. I need a middle ground--someone cool with smoking who doesn't do it too often.

2 Which describes you best?
Early bird (generally rise before 8 a.m. and go to sleep between 10 p.m. and midnight)
Night owl (generally rise after 10 a.m. and go to sleep after midnight)
Night owl, definitely. No problems here.

3 Can you sleep with background noise (music, TV, computer, roommate

Huh? Did all admitted students get these? ( I didn't get any yet.) Or is it just for comfirmed, ED students?

Yeah, I don't think they'd pay attention to any notes. I'm guess since there are so few questions and they are all yes/no, they simply put all the forms with matching answers in a pile and randomly pair people up.

Probably ED students, since they wouldn't send housing stuff to students who hadn't even committed yet.

wow, i was just filling this out today too.

my dad said maybe they'd put people who say they want to study at the library in dorms near the library. so i checked study at the library in hopes of avoiding being way the hell away from everything.

i actually ended up choosing the 2nd choice in everything, even though i can sometimes sleep with distractions, and will study with music depending on what i'm studying, and what i'm listening to. (hardcore memorization: no music. papers: music, but not showtunes...i always want to sing along :() I think headphones would solve most of the music problems though.

I listen to music when doing math and other things that don't require thinking in English. Otherwise, it's too distracting.

That's a good thought about the library. I definitely would rather be near the center of campus (Keeney) than on the outskirts (Perkins).

I'm not sure if I'm an "early bird" or a "night owl." On weekdays, I wake up at around 5:30 and go to bed at 12ish, but on weekends I wake up at noon and go to sleep around 2 or 3.

I'm really lazy, so I figure I'll mostly study in my room. Unless I'm working in a study group. And, bananas, you made a good point about location.

I can sleep with lights on or music (not blasting though), but I would have a hard time sleeping if my roommate brought friends over every night.

I study to classical music, mostly. But headphones are definitely a good solution to any music issues.

Ok, those are all my issues. lol. I just hope I get a flexible roommate!

I was agonizing over the questions also.... but, from what I understand from sources in the know, the whole housing thing is pretty much random. Our answers will probably have little to no effect on future roommates, so the grand strategizing may be for nothing. I've decided to just be optimistic. Besides, bad roommates make for great stories later on.

Unless they steal so much of your stuff that you have to charge them with grand larceny. (Happened to a friend of mine.)

Does the form have room for you to write in personal comments?
If so, keep them simple but honest.
That may save the school from having to call you later.

Unfortunately, there will be roommates who snoop through and/or "borrow" your personal belongings, or will bring others into your room who do stuff you don't care for. You just have to lay down some groundrules from day one. Even put them in writing if necessary. Rules can always be modified during the school term.

Sit down with your roommate(s) at Saturday or Sunday brunch, get to know each other and set some rules in a friendly, mutually supportive manner.

Funny... my roommate form for a SUMMER PROGRAM I did a while ago had way more questions than this one had.

I don't think that's the purpose of the library question, although I may be wrong. My guess would be that they put people who like studying in their rooms together.

Done!

I decided that smokers can find other smokers to live with, but I did check that I could sleep with music on and people in the room. Who knows, maybe I'll get a roommate who will have a jillion friends and share them with me!

Yeah same here, I HAVE to listen to music when I do my work, but I can't stand other people's music, so I don't know what to check. I'm kind of messy but not really, and I don't want to check the organized box and end up with a neat freak.

I'm just hoping I don't get the one homophobic guy on campus for my roommate...

If you do, it's his problem, not yours.
