Housing form question

I'm starting NYU in the fall as a freshman and am in the process of applying for housing. I've chosen to go random in terms of roommate. I'm allergic to smoke, so I can't have a roommate that smokes, but I don't want to live on a CHOICES floor. I know a lot of NYU students are smokers, so is there anyway I can indicate on my app that I need a roommate who doesn't smoke? When I was choosing a school, a lot of schools sent me housing cards that asked if you would mind a smoker, etc., so I find it weird that I can't find it on NYU's app.

you can call NYU housing directly and ask. most likely, you’d need a note from your doctor. that’s usually the case for special requests of a medical reason.

All NYU dorms are non-smoking.

Yeah, but a smoker smells like a smoker whether they’re smoking or not.

I’m pretty sure there’s a difference between not wanting to live with a smoker because they smell like a smoker and not wanting to live with a smoker because you’re allergic to smoke itself. In any event, the rooms are large enough that, unless someone is chain-smoking to the point where they smell like nothing but an overstuffed ashtray, an open window will provide enough fresh air to ensure that the smell isn’t pervasive.

OP, you can try calling Housing, but they will more than likely tell you the same thing (and since they don’t ask about smokers, they probably won’t know who is a smoker anyway). I suggest that when you get your roommate’s contact information, email or call them and let them know about your allergy. Unless they’re a terrible person, in which case you can request a switch, they will probably understand and try to be accommodating.
