Just wondering when Vanderbilt sends early acceptees housing forms and all that stuff. Do we get them in April with the regular decision acceptees or do we get them earlier?

hey...i was wondering the same thing, but i do believe i read somewhere that they send everything out in the first week in april

have you received anything from vandy after sending in your matriculation fee?

and what school at vandy did you get into/whats your major?

I was accepted to College of Arts & Sciences. I think I will major in English and possibly something else, because I plan to go into business or law- but that's likely to change in the next four years. I haven't received anything since sending in my matriculation fee- since we were accepted early does that mean we get first priority on housing? I'm so excited about next year, it's going to be so much fun! Are you thinking of rushing? And are you going to go single or room with someone? Where is your school? Public or private? How many people from your school have been accepted?

...im not sure if we get priority...im definitely considering rushing, are you? if so what house(s) are you looking to join?
im most likely going to get a single room (my friend is there right now and he has a single room and recommended that i get one too--he and his hallmates next year are trying to get a townhouse on campus) what about you?... i go to a public school in solebury, pa(but we have less than 500 kids in grades 9-12, its basically a private school for free) and im the only one from my school this year that applied to vandy (my friend graduated from my school last year and he was the first to go there from my school, either in many many years or the first ever), what about your school, anyone else accepted to vandy?
oh yeah i got into the engineering school for chemical engineering with a minor in mathematics (and possibly premed)

are you thinking about playing any sports there, and if so which ones? have you visited?

I am definitely considering rushing. My great great grandfather was a founding member of the Sigma Chi chapter at Vandy so I might try for Sigma but I also like KA, SAE, Beta Theta Pi, and Phi Delt. I definitely want to go single, everyone I've talked to that has had a single strongly recommends it. I have a friend who is a freshman there this year and she has a rommate and said she thought the singles were sort of anti-social but she;s the only person that has said that everyone else (at least 5 other people) have said all the singles chill out together on their floors and when they want to study the just close their doors. I go to a private school (there are 350 ppl in the upper school grades 9-12) in Charleston SC- yes, I'm southern but not redneck- I promise you there is a difference. Three people of the 71 in my grade applied early- two were accepted and one deferred. I think something like 10 more people applied regular but I don't how many of them have Vandy as a first choice. I visted Vanderbilt during February of last year and did the tour and all the official visiting stuff and loved the campus and how everyone was very friendly and seemed like they really enjoyed being there. I visited again this November and stayed with my friend who's a freshman and went out and experienced the weekend activities. It was so much fun and everyone was really cool and nice. It actually felt a lot like my school just at the university level- small enough that you have a sense of community and see familiar faces a lot but big enough that everyone has their niche. I think people get thrown off by the stereotype of the southern aristocratic designer-clad elite and while Vanderbilt is a big magnet for that there are so many other types of people, which is mainly why I'm excited because (I'm really ashamed to admit this) I guess most people would classify me as the Vanderbilt stereotype (my friends knew where I would end up like two years before I even started looking, no joke) I'm ready to be around all different types of people and get some perspective. After four years of designer bookbags and Range Rovers in the student parking lot, you realize you're missing out on a lot. Well, that said, have you visited? What house(s) do you plan to rush? Do you know anything about hazing at Vandy?

i definitely know what you mean by "designer bookbags and Range Rovers in the student parking lot"...that is basically my school to the "t" ...i visited vandy over the summer and im considering going down again in march to visit my friend but im not sure if i have time (cause im running track and trying to qualify for states) as for rushing a sorority im looking into kappa kappa gamma...i dont think the hazing at Vandy is that bad, my friend rushed this semester and got into his house of choice(i cant remember for sure exactly which one he rushed for) but he never really mentioned anything about hazing or anything really bad, minus the fact that the brothers kept him out til like 3am and wanted him back at the house early morning, but it was a weekend night so it wasnt like he had classes
oh yeah...sorry to ask again, but i was wondering if you were thinking about playing sports at vandy? ...and are you gonna go down in june for the orientation then? and were you thinking about going to one of the "camps" in august before move-in? and if so which one?

im so excited, i cant wait for august!!

If it's like last year, you'll receive a letter giving you your code, then you'll go online and fill out a short questionnaire on what they of housing you want. I'm pretty sure it comes around March. Anyway, about the singles, they are not antisocial at all. Kissam is perfect because you can party and hang out with friend and all that whenever you like, but you can still study and sleep whenever you need to. In Kissam, people in your hall will just leave their doors open and it's like you've got twenty roommates.

Yeah I thought you might know what I meant by all that. Anyway, I might play a sport I'm not really sure though. The only sport I've been involved with in high school is track in 9 and 11 and I think I'm just going to manage this year and take it easy because last year I messed up my knee pretty badly. I also like tennis, although I've never really played on a team, just for fun. I'm also interested in intra-murals and I cannot wait to start working out in their huge gym complex. You should try to visit again! You would have an amazing time, plus it's important to get the best picture of the school before you get there. I think I am going to orientation but I'm not sure when (I do know I can't go after mid June because my friend's graduation from American School of London is June 22). I don't know if I will have time for camp because of traveling with my family (june=london, july= family vacation, august= cramming to get my dorm stuff together and all that other fun stuff) although I would like to go. Do you possibly know any of the dates for orientation and the camp? I will probably go to orientation with my other friend who was accepted early and anyone else from my school who accepts an offer of admission. I know what you mean, I'm so excited, too! What other colleges did you look at before finally deciding and what made you decide?

I looked at Princeton (loved the campus but didn't seem like anyone was having fun and fun, to me, is what college is supposed to be about to an extent), Harvard (hated it... enough said), Duke (good school but didn't get the right vibes from the campus), UVa (loved it but finally decided it was too big), Davidson (beautiful campus but didn't feel right), Columbia (figured out I love NYC, not so much Columbia though), Sewanee (not much to do on top of a mountain), and Wake Forest (didn't feel like people enjoyed it, but I think it was during exam time). I settled on Vanderbilt for a number of reasons:
1. The best southern school in the South (Duke is the best school in the South, but the campus feels like someone picked it up from rural New Jersey and plopped it down in Durham)
2. Amazing English program- on of its strongest programs in A&S
3. Only school I looked at (besides UVa) where the students waved to us on campus- there's a lot of southern hospitality at Vandy
4. Perfect size
5. Beautiful campus
6. Perfect balance of Greek life vs. non-Greek life
7. I love Nashville- my cousins live about 10 minutes from Vanderbilt in Belle Meade and I have been going there since I can remember- there is so much to do and it's like an underground NYC because there's so much going on that people outside of the city don't know about
8. Legacy- ever since I can remember, Vandy has been the benchmark of higher education to all the members of my family who attended
9. Alumni- each alumnus/alumna that I know has gone on to be not only successful but successful in something that they love to do.
10. With a diploma from Vanderbilt, you're sitting pretty when it comes time to apply to grad school

Thanks Frylock! I'm assuming you are a freshman and probably in a single. What's your take on Vanderbilt and do you have any tips for us incoming freshman?

oh cool...yeah i would run either track for vandy(if i can walk-on so it depends on how well i run this season) or possibly be on their rowing club team
umm orientation dates in june are... http://www.vanderbilt.edu/studentlife/summer_orientation/dates.htm ...im leaning towards the june 7/8 one (i'll still be in school for both but the 14/15 is cutting it close to graduation for me) and then the summer program is... http://www.vanderbilt.edu/studentlife/doreways/ and i would go to the squirrel camp one(my friend went last year and had an amazing time)

i looked at a bunch of other schools... clemson(good finaid), purdue(good program), penn state--main campus(state school plus im a part-time student at one of its satellite campuses), and colorado school of mines(college counselor wanted me to go there) <-- accepted to those four prior to vanderbilt's acceptance and i also looked at bucknell (lots of hands on but in the middle of nowhere,pa), lehigh(45min from my house with a good engineering program), washington university in st louis(this was one of my second choices), cornell(too cold for me), harvard(eh so not me), USC(would have gone here if i didnt get into vandy, wustl, or northwestern), upenn(45min from my house and a good name but other than that i only really liked it for penn relays haha--bad reason), and northwestern(which was a second choice up there with wustl but i decided i really wanted to go south for undergrad)...oh yeah and ursinus but only b/c they were actively recruiting me for track/cross country but they didnt have my major and it wasnt really where i wanted to be
i decided on vandy as my number one, because my friend is there having an amazing time and his mom also went there and encouraged me to apply and visit...the visit was amazing i feel in love with the feel of the campus and all that it has to offer and the people are sooo nice and welcoming

when do you graduate? what classes are you taking this year? (any ap exams in may?)

Freshman housing assignments are random; you only specify if you want a single or a double. You "apply" in March online after you have recieved your code to set up your VUnetID (which is basically your computer identity for email, OASIS, online apps, Blackboard, etc).

You guys should go to the first orientation because that is when you make out your schedule and it is first come first serve. They send out applications in April I think, but you can also apply online.

if you are rushing you might want to get a double, branscomb is the most social dorm

Thanks you guys. I'll definitely plan on going to the first orientation if it's first come first serve registration. And I've heard that while Branscomb is the most social dorm being in a single does not hold you back in any way when it comes to rushing. Is that true? What are the pros and cons of a single vs a double? Annak- I graduate May 21 and I am taking 5 AP exams (german, studio art (not an exam but our portfolios are due), calc ab, bio, and english lit), Luckily, those are all my courses this year so I will be done beginning of the second week of May. Also, thanks for the dates!

ooo thats cool that you'll be done so early...i dont graduate til the 17th of june but ill barely be there through may and june anyways

Registration is NOT first-come, first serve. It's like in high school; you "request" placement in classes and only after everybody has made course requests does the registrar's office place everybody in classes. In the summer, they don't do this until July, after all the incoming freshman have registered. 90% of the time, you'll get what you want, when you want. Sometimes, there won't be room for everybody and you may get bumped, but then you'll have first priority during the change period.

what are the pros and cons of single and double dorms?

SINGLE- you can close the door and have a room to yourself to study sleep/ you dont have to leave cause your roommate is "busy" or its too loud for you to study because well theres no one else there
- you have multiple roommates aka your hallmates (leave your door open and someone will walk in, everytime)

DOUBLE- you always have a friend there (hopefully unless you dont like your roommate)
- more parties in the double dorms but its not like the people in the single dorms aren't invited/don't have their own

there's more but those are the main ones...it really just depends on if you want to study in your room, how quiet you need/want it to be then, how much studying your major requires (im gonna be an engineering major so i want to have my own room my first year so that im able to close the door to study and not forced to go to the library if i dont want to also i value privacy so it would be nice to shut the door and be alone)

Anyone in graduate housing @ lehigh?
