Hello all.
I just have a quick question maybe someone can answer.
My oldest is off to UF this fall and is STILL waiting for a room assignment.
His Application date is 12/26/2008.
We have been getting the Room Assignment Update emails and we have looked at the blog, but it's very frustrating when he is leaving in just over a month
and not sure where or what type of room he's going to have.
Is this normal? From my understanding on the Blog, he is in hold group 3 and
"Should be assigned to one of his room preferences" but at the same time
he may still be assigned to a Perm Triple.
I just can't fathom that someone who applied for housing before 75% of his class still does not have a room assignment.

i’m not sure its that weird. i think next time it’ll come most likely, but if not, i dont think there’s anything to be concerned about. i had a late application date for group 3, and wanted a double in broward–which is a pretty popular option, which is why i dont think its unusual. as i understand, the availability of your choices is the most important factor in determining where you’re places.

Just as a side note: I have housing and everything, but every week or so, people who do have housing get an email from the Housing department, roughly saying “If you’re not going to stay in our housing for the fall, cancel your contract!!”.

In the last email they sent (a few days ago), it said that after July 15 (tomorrow), they would start charging heavy late cancellation fees. So basically, I would expect them to be finishing up their fall cancellations for the most part by tomorrow. Look for a room assignment within the next 7 days, is what I would guess.

Ok, so now it’s after July 24th and my son STILL is not assigned a room.
The email we received said:
So basically I take it that the following will occur:
he will be assigned to a temp triple room, and
he will be stuck there for awhile (he spoke to someone else in the same boat with application date of mid Nov. My son is end of Dec).

So here are my questions.
How long does it take to detriple the rooms?
Will UF charge him a triple room rate for 1st semester?
Is a Temp Triple a normal Traditional Double with a bunk bed and a dresser and desk shoe-horned in there somewhere?
His grandparents where going to buy a mini fridge for him, but if he’s stuck in a Temp Triple
doesn’t sound like there is going to be any room for it, much less a closet to put it in.

I have to say I am very irked with UF at this point over the housing issue. How can you tell
someone who applied before approx 27% of his classmates that he will get a triple room for unknown length of time and then tell them this from the email:
In otherwords he probably will not know which room or hall he is in until MOVE IN WEEK!!
Of course there is always the option to cancel the contract and receiving NONE of the deposit back. If UF was SMART they would offer those still awaiting rooms an exemption on the cancellation fee. Maybe then they would have enough rooms to assign to everyone.

UFparent, why do you think that your housing date is before 75% of other freshman? Most folks we know go online to apply for housing and get an early priority number the week the site goes live. In August. And completed applications are due in November. So a date of 12/28/08 is a very late date, actually. Most folks know to apply for housing and get a date as early as possible. Just saying…

Yeah I miswrote that in the first post, but corrected in later post.
He is before 25% of classmates.
We received a Temporary housing assignment 2 days ago (assigned to Diamond Villages), which is a non trad dorm in a 2 br apt with 2 other boys.
Then today we got his Perm room assignment email.
He’s assigned to Hume West double suite. He’s not an honor student, but came close
so it may all work out in the end. Only downside is it’s $700+ more per semester than
he was planning on.
Personally, I think it will be better for him to be around Honors Students.

He may have applied before 25% of other applicants, but not 25% of those who ultimately were accepted and enrolled. They don’t take that many students who submit applications after the November deadline. He might have been in the last 5% accepted.

He got a great dorm. Well before classes start.
