Okay so I understand that freshmen stay in one of the 4 freshmen dorms, but what about sophomores, juniors, and seniors? For how many years does GU guarantee housing and do people generally like it or prefer to live off campus?

there are only 4 freshman dorms? which ones are they?

Yeah they are New South, Village C, Harbin and Darnall. I stayed overnight with a student in Harbin. I thought the room was nice and spacious, especially after visiting a friend at her tiny room at BU.

Darnall looks pretty isolated from the rest on the map. I wonder what thats like?

Yeah me too. Does anyone have any input about the advantages/disadvantages of the dorms?

yea i liked Harbin too.

This has been answered other places, but hey Hoyas are helpful people. Oh, but I should mention that you don't get to choose where you live so it doesn't matter that much. You'll learn to like whatever you get.

Harbin- has a pretty central location on campus. The dorms are arranged in clusters so you get to know the people you live near really well. Clusters are single gender but floors are coed. Bathrooms, showers and sinks are in separate rooms but each cluster has their own. People in Harbin generally like it a lot.

Village C West- Each room has its own bathroom, which can be both a good and bad thing- you never have to wait and you have privacy but you also have to clean it yourself. The rooms are pretty small because of the bathrooms. The common rooms are nice though so people can chill there.

New South- most social dorm with 100 people on each floor. The floors are split so half is guys, half girls, bathrooms in each area. The rooms are pretty big, with a lot of desk and storage space. New South is the party dorm and it rocks.

Darnall- 50 people per floor so you get to know people kind of well. I actually haven't been to Darnall, but I think the dorms are a decent size. Darnall is very far away from the dining hall but closer to some classes. People in darnall sometimes stick together because they are far away.

Most people live in campus housing all 4 years because there are some good options. Sophomores mostly live in dorms but some get apartments. Juniors and Seniors live in apartments or townhouses. Some people do choose to live in housing not owned by georgetown, and those places are nice too. Housing is really pretty nice here in general.

The map is a little misleading regarding darnall. You have to remember that the Georgetown campus is only 104 acres, which is pretty tiny. It only takes 7 mins to walk from St. Mary's (even farther than Darnall) to Lauinger Library, so while Darnall seems like it's really out of the way, it's not a big deal.

the rooms in darnall are the smallest of the freshman dorms (about 175 sq. ft.), but a good size in comparison to other schools.

As far as Darnall goes, all of the Darnall kids have great camaraderie..and some really hilarious stories. Plus, they are close to Vital Vittles and Hoya Court and all the bus stops.

The long walk to the dining hall won't bother you after you get sick of it and decide you'd rather eat Wisey's anyway.

Which is nearly the same distance...

Okay, well if you don't get to choose which dorm you want, do they at least ask you for your preference? And do you find out before you get there?

No. They don't tell you what dorm you're in before you get there. You have to go around and knock on every door until you find one that'll take you. It's like trick-or-treating, but better.

...end sarcasm, sorry.

Yes, you'll know where your room is.

Haha... I meant do you get your room assignment during the summer or when you move in.

So did I. (10 chars)

Some people do request what dorm they want in the roommate selection process, but I really have no idea how they actually assign people to dorms. You find out your dorm like August 1st, so you have about 3-4 weeks before you move in to plan stuff out or whatever.
