I have a question about housing. I understand that we are only guaranteed housing for 3 years and that either soph or junior year, we are kicked off depending on the college. During that time, we have to get off campus housing right? My question is if we are on FA, do we have to pay for this? Also, are we allowed to still eat in our college. If not, do they give out a food allowance too?

You can search past threads, but I’ll summarize. If you have financial aid Rice will budget you the same amount of money on and offcampus. If you are frugal or live with friends, you can save money living offcampus. Yes, Rice will issue you a check if you have more “need” than just tuition and you live offcampus. Yes, you can still eat in the colleges using off-campus mealplans or tetra points. My DD ended up living oncampus only 3 semesters due to study abroad and personal preference. She/we saved money since she found cheap places within only a few blocks of Rice, and she only ate about 1 meal a day on campus.

awesomeness!

I don’t know why everyone gets stuck on the whole “housing is only guaranteed for three years” thing. At UT you’re lucky if you get housing any time past your sophomore year. A lot of people at Rice (myself included) are on-campus all four years. It’s really not a big deal.

Correct me if I’m wrong then…

If I am a transfer student who does not end up with on-campus housing this fall, I will then in subsequent years of study at Rice, 100% be guaranteed housing?

Yes, assuming you go through your college’s jack procedures correctly.
