Not sure if this is the right forum, so my bad if it’s not.
I’ve been admitted into both UM-Twin Cities and UW-Madison. I’m most likely going to one of these two. Housing applications are available for both. I’m in the process of filling out the application, yet I have a question.
If I fill out both housing apps, and end up choosing UMTC, can I just cancel the Madison housing or am I bound to that? (I know it’s nonrefundable, but I find the contract a bit confusing.)
Thanks yo
I wouldn’t fill out housing paperwork until you’re sure the schools are affordable. Has your dad agreed to help pay? Your mom’s $30k/year income will make you eligible for the ~$5900/year Pell Grant. You can take the $5500/year federal student loan too, but how will you pay the rest?
Yeah my dad agreed to help. I just need to know if I can back out of a housing agreement, or if I’m bound to it?
You need to ask them.
But realistically, you are better off just deciding for one or the other, and saving that potentially lost deposit.
UW housing form is not due until May 1 and it is a lottery, not a first-come first served process, so there is no value in “getting in line” for housing at UW.
If MN is a “first come first served” housing process, and there’s a reasonable chance you will attend, then its worth submitting the housing form. Most of the public flagships my kid was admitted to, and which used a “first come first served” process for housing, also refunded most, but not all, of the housing deposit if you declined the school’s offer of admission and timely requested refund of housing deposit. So, say the housing deposit was $200, usually $150 would be refunded if you cancelled on time because you were attending another school.
The key word is contract. They might let you out, they might not. While it is better for the school if they do, because it is a contract, they don’t have to. Wait until your sure which school you want to attend.
