Housing Info For Incoming Transfers

I know this has somewhat been done but as I will not be able to visit before the housing preference deadline I would really appreciate it if current/past students could tell me all they know about these options, which are available to incoming transfers.

156 High Street
202 Washington
230 Washington
Hewitt
Nicolson

Note: I have not actually seen the rooms in 156 high or either of the Wash street houses, so the info there is all second hand (but I do know people who thoroughly inspected these places this year when looking at housing, as well as people who lived in one of the Wash houses):

202+230 Wash: Located on Washington street. Sophmores.

The good: Nice open common spaces, kitchens, etc. Nice looking houses — they are real former houses (REALLY big) converted into student housing. Nice rooms, many of which are really big. Some people who live there really like the sense of community that develops from living in a house. Close to the CFA, which is a plus if you are into the arts.

The bad: Far away from the rest of the campus (other than the CFA). Many (all?) of the rooms are one room doubles. You have to cross a major street to get to campus. Many people who live there feel isolated and cut off from campus. The people I know who lived there hated it because of that.

156 High: Located above WesWings and some dance studios. Sophomores an juniors.

The good: Big-ish rooms with windows. I think there are singles and two room doubles, but I'm not sure. Pretty central location, near a number of classrooms, the frats and many program houses. Not a bad walk to the new campus center.

The bad: Not many people live there, smells like burgers/chicken wings, etc. because of being over WesWings. Just kind of a random place to live, and probably won't be that good for making new friends as a transfer.

Nicholson: Located on Foss Hill. Freshmen + upperclassmen (mainly or all sophomores)

The good: Foss Hill location=spiffy. Will probably get a single or two room double. Balconies in many rooms. Generally a cool place.

The bad: Not quite as close to the new campus center or the classrooms as Hewitt, but the difference is negligible. Not a new and shiny interior, but it's fine.

Hewitt: Foss Hill. Upperclassmen (mainly or all sophomores and juniors).

The Good: Foss Hill location=spiffy. Right next to the new campus center=great. Pretty close to classes. Really close to the CFA. Singles and two room doubles. Balconies in most rooms. Right next to the new campus center!

The bad: Not that new and shiny either, but again, it's fine.

My recommendation: Shoot for Hewitt or the Nics. For serious. They have the best combination of location + sociability + nice enough rooms. Totally the dorms all the sophomores wanted to live in. (As between the two, I'd say Hewitt first, but you might like living somewhere with Freshmen who are also new to Wes, and either one would be great).

thank you verrrrrrrrrrrry much. :)

You're welcome! Good luck getting the Nics or Hewitt (hopefully you will have better luck than I have had in getting your first choice housing).

yeah I'm already pretty much set on Nic for 1st choice and Hewitt for 2nd, but I can't decide what would be best for 3rd.

Hmmmmm...Well, one of the Wash street houses would probably be better for making friends, but 156 High has a better location. Hopefully someone whose actually lived in one (or at least been to them!) will be able to help you out more as between those.

i'm in hewitt - could anyone who lived there tell me more about it? if no roomate was listed in my eportfolio does that mean i don't have one? will i be disadvantaged living in hewitt as opposed to in the nics? is there anyway i could get a floor plan?

I think Hewitt is better than the Nics personally, but I suppose that's a matter of opinion. Hewitt has a totally sweet brand-new-as-of-last-year kitchen, and is going to be right next to the new campus center. It's also all sophomores and juniors, which I think was helpful to transfers for meeting people last year. I have a lot of transfer friends who lived in Hewitt now, and I always forget that they were transfers, because they just integrated pretty seamlessly into the environment. I've heard it's a little tougher for transfers living in some other dorms, but I think it depends a lot on other factors.

Basically, there's nothing wrong with Hewitt. It tends to be the first choice for juniors who didn't get HiRise/LoRise, and for the sophomores with the best lottery picks. And, also, it does have a lot of singles - chances are, hollyhop, that you might not have a roommate.

hollyhop... which hewitt building are you in? 8, 9, or 10? I'm a rising sophomore and I'll be in hewitt also

i'm in hewitt 8 - how does the seperation work between, say, hewitt 8 and 9? is it co-ed by room? how big are the rooms?

also thanks everyone for the quick replies!

I think hewitt 8 and 9 are physically connected by the first floor where a lounge and kitchen are located, but I think hewitt 10 might be separate, with an overhang connecting it to 9. it is co-ed by room, and most of the singles have doors connecting them to the adjacent room, which PSafe can open for you, I think. every other room has balcony access. the rooms seemed fairly comfortable... they definitely aren't tiny. plus we're close to the new campus center

hollyhop - are you a transfer? where on your Eportfolio did you access your housing update?

i went into my eportfolio and clicked under student profile. there, it should list your home address and your school address including your room and dorm. good luck!

I found it, but it only lists my home address right now. I wonder if they just happen to do sophomore transfers first. Have any other transfers been able to access their housing decision?

Same question Hollyhop asked: If no roommate is mentioned, does that mean my son got a single? He'll be in one of the Butts.

i heard that wesleyan took off the room address because they learned that people were checking and rooming assignments weren't official yet - i think we're supposed to get the official email tomorrow though, so it shouldn't matter anyway

tks for the help hollyhop. I was able to view my housing decision today and I got Nicolson, which was my 1st choice, so I'm very happy. :)

What's the most socially active place to live for transfers. I know I'm late, but the ResLife office said they might move me, and I was wondering where the best place would be for a "work hard-play hard" sort of person. Right now I'm in 230 Washington and from what I have gathered here, that seems to be a pretty socially isolated house. Any suggestions?

I didn't think the houses would be so great at first but after visiting I've realized that they're not far from the center of campus at all. They're really nice houses as well and you'll be living with 30 or so other people so it can't be that isolated. If you really want to be moved, Nicolson and Hewitt both seem to have the best location for transfers.
