housing info needed-Dupont

My son received his housing/roommate notice yesterday and will be living in Dupont Hall.I watched the virtual tour of the dorm and have a few questions: 4 boys and 1 bathroom. Who cleans the bathrooms? The kids? (Uh, oh!) Also, I saw bulletin boards in the room. Are they provided? Finally, Dupont has air conditioning--will he still need a fan? Thank you.

My son’s in DuPont as well (102). The boys clean the bathrooms! I’ve been searching for more pictures as we are OOS, so quick supply trips are not possible. Looks like there are medicine cabinets in the bathrooms, storage above the closets, closets have sliding doors so no over the door storage is possible, 4 plugs, roughly 10x13 with another 4’ bump out for closet area, basement kitchen with full size fridge, microwave, 2 stoves and a sink.

I haven’t read any posts stating that fans are needed.

Facebook has a DuPont page where some RAs have posted. I would ask them the detailed questions.

D was in DuPont freshman year and says the bulletin boards are provided. She went with a fan, but never used it, though she says things get hot when the A/C is turned off in late(ish) fall.

It’s a great learning experience for 4 freshmen to figure out how to share cleaning a bathroom. D says it’s going to get gross unless one of the 4 is That Kid Who Cleans Bathrooms. She was that kid because she’s fussy that way. She says it’s hard to get used to hall bathrooms after the relative privacy of a suite bathroom.

Residence halls that have suite bathrooms (two rooms sharing a common bathrooms) like Dupont are cleaned by the students sharing the bathroom because W&M custodians cannot enter individual students’ rooms (which they would need to do to clean the bathroom).

As for fans, W&M is in charge of turning the A/C on and off to those residence halls that have it (and to all main campus buildings) so it is possible to have warm days after the A/C is turned off (usually in early October and not turned on again until some time in April) so having a fan may not be a terrible option but space should be considered.

BurghMom3, the good news is that places like Target are not at all far from campus and if you plan to come to Williamsburg a day early (before Orientation) or plan to stay through Saturday you’ll likely have time to run to such places while your student is taking part in Orientation.

don’t worry twocollegekids, you still have a month to teach your kid how to clean the bathroom! lol

but yea… the kids clean them. Hall bathrooms are cleaned by cleaning staff, but suite bathrooms are the residents’ responsibility.

The AC will get shut off at some point (October-ish?), and doesn’t come on until the middle of April. If there are warmer days without the AC, a fan might be nice.

going to facebook with your questions will probably be the most successful

To be honest, my S knows how to clean a bathroom, but usually under threats from mom. I asked the question because now I need to add “cleaning supplies” to the pack list. With this setup, will he still need a bath caddy/basket for his personal items? And I will send the fan-he is a boy afterall!

I never actually lived in a dorm with suite bathrooms, but I would go “yes” for a shower caddy, because I doubt there is shelf space for 4 people’s soap and shampoo? worst case scenario is he ends up using it as a bucket for misc items?

In the next few weeks, RAs and OAs will be sending communication to the incoming students and they will likely address what students should and should not bring. They will also be great resources for questions such as these since they know the residence hall best.

S2 was a freshman in a DuPont suite last year. The shared bathroom was never cleaned . All those cleaning supplies I purchased? Never used. There are no words . None of the guys was willing to do it, and no one wanted to tackle the mess alone. Unfortunately, as a parent you have to step back & let the suite mates sort out a cleaning program themselves. W&M tacked on a cleaning charge at the end of the year, which I made S2 pay. It was money well spent.

Fan: I bought S2 a small inexpensive fan that clipped onto the head post of his bed. He used it every day.

Outlets: make sure to bring several power strips with long cords. You can always return any unused power strips back to the store (with receipt) but it’s a pain in the neck to run out to the store during move-in to buy them.

Move-in day: I was impressed with how smoothly everything went at W&M. Better than my S1’s college :D, which was total chaos. Upperclassmen helped unload the cars, which pull up to the curb outside DuPont long enough to unload, then go to a parking lot. W&M also provided cold bottles of water & drinks. Try to get there early in the morning before the heat & humidity set in. There was a long line of traffic snaking around campus & into W’burg, but it moved pretty quickly. I think we sat in traffic ~1/2 hour. W&M was efficient with their traffic control.
