I know that the housing is a random lottery, but is there any way to guarantee that I won't be placed in a triple room? The extra cost seems worth it for the space.

My son, currently a sophomore, was able to get a double both last year and this year. If for some reason you are assigned triple, simply submit a change request–they call it a Change of Assignment Request (CAR), that’s what my son did–good luck!

Alright perfect, thank you!!

The norm is a triple though, freshman usually aren’t able to get a double because upperclassmen file housing earlier and they get most of the spots.

@storme is right. I know some first years that got triples, but there isn’t that many. You have to be reallyyy lucky. I got put into a triple plaza, (my 2nd choice) and I submitted a change of assignment request but they weren’t able to switch me out.

How is it living in a triple?

I don’t mind it. My roommates and I don’t really talk. We’re more like acquaintances. We don’t hate each other but we just don’t really talk much. So my room is quiet most of the time and we mind our own businesses so in my opinion, a triple isn’t bad at all.

The difference between a triple in a hall, a plaza, and a suite can also be noticeable. I lived first in a triple plaza with shared bath, which was pretty nice and didn’t feel too crowded except when my roommates or I had guests over. The suites were extremely spacious, considering they were the same price as the plaza. In addition to the bedroom/shared bathroom, there was also a huge living room with a couch and table/chairs and additional closet space.

If you do end up in a triple and still want a double, you can still do a room swap. The first couple of weeks into Fall quarter the hill does a room swap, where you state what room you have and what room you want, and you find someone to trade with. Most people try to get into triple/hall because they find that they want something cheaper, so getting into a more expensive room like a double wouldn’t be too difficult.
