MikeW…we are from new england. sons unweighted gpa about a 3.2, weighted gpa: 7.2 on his 7.0 scale and 3.7 on the weighted 4.0 scale. SAT 1410 (not including writing)…the auburn scholarship webpage has the SAT/GPA cutoffs for each of the scholarships. with the heritage (2/3 oos tuition and fees) auburn is actually cheaper than any of our state schools. son did not look at alabama. the other southern schools my son considered…georgia tech and clemson. he wanted to attend a big southern school with a decent amount of students from oos. he just received his housing assignment and 3 of the 4 guys he will be rooming with are from oos.

bluemath -

if your sons GPA is 7.2/7 then shouldn’t it be over a 4.0 on a 4 point scale?

7.2/7 - 1.029
4 * 1.029 - 4.11

i know it doesn’t matter, since you already have everything worked out, but it just seemed odd to me that he doesn’t have greater than a 4.0 on the 4 point scale.

we are shooting for the 2/3 tuition, too. without that, auburn will be out of the running.

i wanted to look at clemson and u south carolina, but dd decided they were just a little too far. they may be. clemson’s size is appealing to me, though i have not had any glimpse of the campus.

.for my son’s unusual grade weighting…Actually an A is weighted 7.0 college prep, 8.0 honors, 9.0 AP. Up through junior year, all honors classes, so his 7.2 was a B+ avg in honors (3.2 unweighted). The other hs in our district used the scale 4.0/4.5/5.0…so his unweighted 3.2 had an additional .5 added…either way, it did all work out…As far as Clemson goes, the style of the buildings are very similar to Auburn, except the layout is a little more meandering and more trees on the walking paths. It is an attractive campus. However, it is in the middle of nowhere. It feels so, so remote.

Our son starts the fall as a Presidential scholar. For those of you still working on test scores make sure and have your student take both the SAT and ACT. Your test scores do not have to qualify on both just one of the tests and some students seem to do better on one than the other. SAT score for our son would have not have qualified for Presidential but he qualified with ACT (SAT was very close). (Hope our younger son can get the qualifying scores during his up coming high school jr year). Living in an eastern state the SAT seems to be the primary focus and test pushed at high school (I believe our son may have been the only student in his grad. class to take the ACT) but we moved here from an ACT state (midwest/great plains) so had our son take both and it paid off.

Other great thing was our son was notified before Christmas break about being awarded the scholarship; just make sure you apply by deadline. Last year it was Dec 4th (I believe our son completed his app on 3 Dec and heard back by the 18th or 19th of Dec).

South Carolina came through with some good offers but it was March and our son had already made up his mind and had started to acquire an orange and blue wardrobe. Clemson notifed us about out of state tuition waiver early but other offers came late relative to Auburn.
