Housing Lotter

Housing Lottery
Has anyone picked housing lately? What's still available?

londonb,

You are referring to freshmen dorms, right? I believe your son is an incoming freshman at CAS?

They have been assigning housing to Sophomores. My son has been assigned a dorm, his third choice even though he had a sign-up time online for the first day (albeit later in the day).

The housing policy has changed for freshmen with everyone (EDs and RDs) thrown into a random lottery. It should be after June 1, which is the due date for the $1000 Housing Deposit for Freshmen, as I understand it.

^ So, it’s not on some kind of first come first serve basis?

I don’t have to rush to make a decision?

How does it work? Will I be able to get my first choice dorm?

I have an upperclassman with a lousy pick time. I will have a second at NYU - my son has decided to become part of the class of 2015!

spaz,

You responded when I posted info about the new Housing Policy. You have as much chance as anyone else to get your first choice with the new Housing Policy, as long as you get your Housing Deposit (and Application, I think) in by the deadline.

Congrats, but as I said before, londonb, I am not sure if I should be happy or anxious for you because you have two kids’ tuition to pay for (both NYU, lordy). :frowning: :)

I think your D is a Junior or Senior and they do have lousier assigned times than Sophomores, who are given the best times to choose dorms among all upperclassmen (women).

londonb,

By the way, Glamercy and Palladium seemed to have closed, at least for suites of friends, by the first day for Sophomore assignments. S was given his third choice of Coral Towers. And it sounds like they are now into or past the smaller rooms in Coral Towers and have moved onto Carlyle Court for Sophomore assignments.

Oooh, ouch he got Coral. That’s no good. =/

What’s wrong with Coral Towers? S and his friends like the big common room and fairly good size kitchen. They are on a high floor with one of the more spacious suites for 6 people because their suite is not low cost. I read it has more community than Palladium and Carlye Court (or Glamercy) because it is around half the size of the other two.

S and friends really wanted a big common room. They got it (for entertaining and musical instruments). What have you heard or noticed about the dorm? Not that it makes any difference to S and friends since they have been assigned already. Just for general info.

Thanks Evolving. Possibly crossing at least two off the list.

@hellodocks - Since this is my own thread, I guess I can hijack it. Is it true that the students at the Florence Study Abroad site take part in the olive oil production at the villa?
Professor Baer was speaking about this at the CAS Admitted Students Day this past weekend.

My sophmore son’s lottery pick was the 2nd day early in the morning. He wanted Palladium and there were tons and tons of rooms available. He’s happy. I told him to enjoy it because next year’s status as a Junior is not high.

Cody, I guess my S was more limited because he was looking for a suite to accommodate 5-6 people because I am fairly certain second choice was Palladium for the group. They ended up with their third choice Coral Towers.

Yeah, congrats to your son. P. has a really nice set up with gym, pool, and dining hall. Must feel like you are living in a hotel. :)

Evolving, Congrats to your son as well, I hear Coral Towers is beautiful. You were right my son was looking for a double and those were plentiful. He registered last Wed. morning(maybe that was the 1st day?) Anyway, I think these kids are real spoiled. When they grauduate and get into reality, they will realize that this will problably be the nicest place they’ll be living in NYC for many years.

cody,

Are you confusing Gramercy with Coral Towers. I just heard upthread Post #7 that getting Coral T. is OUCH! Hehe, S looked over all the dorms before he signed up. He did comment Coral T. has big common area rooms ( a priority for him) and while he liked Palladium, the common areas seemed much smaller. S had a 3 PM slot the first day, Tuesday last week but his larger group limited the choices.

That is the truth. My dream has been to live in the Union Sq. area but it is too pricey for me for the space you get. The kids do have it really good with this real estate they live in (which does cost us quite a bit; I think at $13,500+ for a double, that works out to be approx. $1800/ month for rent. Ouch!)

As my friend Evolving knows, my D had a Friday afternoon time and ended up with 4th choice, Carlyle…by then Coral (her first choice) had only a few smaller rooms, the least desirable in each suite, Palladium was completely full, UHall had space but I had incorrect price information, and that left Carlyle…but it’s really not a bad option and they had plenty of space. Be sure if you do Carlyle to get a “B” room…the kitchen/common area opens into the “A” side so the “B” offers more privacy. All of these are excellent locations for the Washington Square campus/Tisch/Union Square area/etc. And really, compared to the dorms where many of us lived in the 70’s and 80’s, our kids have it pretty great. For goodness sake, they are NYC and have apartments that are probably bigger than most working adults in the city!!!

writestuff, my friend, exactly ^.

Your summary of what was available by last Friday is also very helpful, relating back to londonb’s original question. At least, as an update for upperclassmen/ women.

Readers, pay attention, writestuff has really done due diligence on these dorms. Impressive, detailed info.

By the way, UHall was originally top choice for S. But I think the prices are uniformly high in the $15,000 range? So, I nixed it. To go from $11,800+ Freshman year to $13,500+ Sophomore year was enough.

Sorry, I meant Alumni Hall, which is $17,000+ for Single BR suites.

Coral doesn’t typically get favorable reviews from students. Words like “hellhole,” “glum,” “prison,” “where happiness goes to die,” and other things come to mind just from kids I know who lived there. Haven’t heard even one person speak of it positively. Hope it works out for him though, seems like he made an informed decision based on his needs.

Thanks evolving, codysmomma and writestuff! D still has a couple of more days to wait. I don’t think there will be much left…

Hey everyone! Here’s something confusing about U Hall. When I first printed out rates, it said U Hall was $15,000+ so I told D no way…now if you look on the rates in the Living At NYU page on the NYU website, U Hall is the exact same price as the other non-low cost options. WTH…I am not sure why this rate changed, but I have a print out from when it said $15,645. So for some of you this might be an option since they still had rooms as of last week, but caveat, I’m told the dining facility at U Hall has been shut down because of failed health inspections so don’t pick it because there is a dining hall! EEEW.
