Housing - Off Campus

I applied for on campus housing mid Jun 2012 which I never received a room assignment. Each week, the reps at USF housing was giving me excuses and told me to check back later. Find out recently from USF, they are now all booked any many people won't be getting in housing. In a week, they will be sending an email out asking if you want to be on a waiting lists or get a refund back. In this case, you will have to start to look for housing off campus.

Do anybody have any suggestions for great apartments off campus that are beautiful and relaxing? I am looking for a place where the apartments are nice, big, and great amenities and features. Please let me know your recommendations. Thanks!

P.S. What a bummer not be able to live on campus which I was looking for to....

I’m assuming you’re an upperclassmen student? I’m assuming this because I thought 1st years were guaranteed housing on campus, so I’m a bit surprised if you’re not.

Anyways… I would highly recommend checking out the USF Housing group, a lot of students are looking for others to either take up an extra room or to takeover their lease ASAP. I’ve even seen a few who are so desperate to transfer the lease that they’ll pay the 1st months rent:

As for the convenience factor, I would recommend making sure that where ever you decide to stay is either on the Bull Runner route, or within walking distance of campus (unless you have a car).

Hope it all works out for you! :)

On 50 Apartments are decent, affordable, and conveniently located across street from campus–you can easily walk to campus or use USF BullRunner buses which stop in front of complex–almost like living on campus. If you want an apartment that is really nice, look at St. Croix Apartments north of campus–pricey though and you’d probably need car to get back and forth to campus or have to walk over to 42nd St. to make connection on BullRunner. I’d avoid apartments on 42nd St just north of campus–too many breakins, thefts, and general bad stuff and mischief happening at apts and parking lots on 42nd lately.

@itsxlizzyxxox; @lizard; Thank you both for the advice above where I am a transfer student and new to USF. As for transportation, I do have a car but will use more to go out and handling personal business. At this time, my choices are St Croix, The Province, and On 50 which I like when research online.

I will also check the USF Housing Group above.

Thank you!

Anybody have experience or currently living at ON50 in Tampa? I can’t believe they have a APPLICATION FEE of $275.00. I would need to make a visit first to see the place rather than doing it online.

I was at On 50 for two years, I liked the complex and the management was always fair with me. The BullRunner stops right by On 50 and I used that often too. The nearness to campus that allowed me to walk to campus was the most important feature about On 50 for me.

All the apartment managers will try to get into your pockets with garbage fees at lease signing. They’ll try to hit you up upfront for administrative fees, application fees, utility deposits, security deposits, etc. Use your negotiating skills to get them to knock off a few bucks; they are as anxious to rent out their apartment units as you are to get in a new apartment unit.

The Province apartments are nice too and newer, but they are a long walk south of campus and they seem to jack their rent up every year–a bike would work there getting to campus–BullRunner goes by there too. The developer/owners of The Province just bought the old Edge Tower/Fontana Hall on Fletcher Ave. They hope to tear down the old building and build a new apartment tower on the site in a few years.

Below link has a pretty neat aerial photo showing distances from campus for apartments. The ON 50 apts. are 10 seconds away, you only have to cross 50th street to be on campus. In the aerial you can see parts of runways left from the Army training airbase from WW II days just north of present day Busch Gardens and just to west of The Province apartments.

@lizard Thanks for the information below. I have read and see many bad reviews for ON50 due to bugs, roaches, cheap furniture, etc. while the Province have issues for alot of loudness and parties. At this time, my choice is St Croix which I can have a room by myself and bring in my own furniture rather than putting into storage.

St Croix cost a couple hundred dollars more than ON50 but at least it could be much quieter and less issues. As for ON50, only good thing about them would I can save some money connecting with a roommate match with them.

St. Croix is nice and might be a good fit for you. I never had a problem with bugs at On50; if I did, the management would have sprayed apartment. I sometimes think the negative reviews written online about apartments are mostly submitted by leasing agents at competing apt. complexes when they have quiet time between serving their own customers!

I will check out St Croix and On50 this weekend and make a decision. Thanks for the advice and help.
