What are the chances of my daughter getting a good single on West Campus if she got a time slot of 6 p.m. on the first day? Any tricks to getting one? She heard that everything fills up in a couple of hours on the first day. Is that true?

lol first day…she can get into any room she wants anywhere she wants

biggest and most comfortable singles are in Mennen Hall fyi

ImTheHost, that’s completely false. you can have a time on the first day and get stuck in the eco house for all you know. does the housing signup start at 4 pm or 6 pm? i think i remember it being 4 pm. all the suites will be gone by then. she may be able to get a single in one of the modern dorms on west if shes REALLY lucky, or a single in a gothic if shes lucky. but then again, rising sophomores get priority this year so the odds might be completely different.

I was under the assumption she was a rising sophomore so she has first priority. No one picks the best singles which are in Mennen Hall (biggest singles and less noisy from hearing other ppl live next to you like the singles in say Rose Hall fyi) plus you get a huge kitchen.

When I did the housing for West Campus, I was a rising sophomore so we had to wait till rising juniors went first and I had a slot on wed afternoon and still got a single.

Inthehost, did you really get a single? On west campus on the second day?? If this is true I will feel so much better about this room selection thing. Was it in the gothics or one of the main buildings?

Thanks for the responses! I just told her to check out this thread, for I am sure she will feel better about the process.

i had it on the third day (wed)…still got a single (gothics)

Update: D is very upset. She tried to get a single in a suite with friends. Nothing was left at 6 p.m. for friends (with later times.) She ended up getting the last single left in an old dorm that others say is gross–spider webs, no laundry, etc. Can it really be that bad?? I told her she will make the best of it. Now her friends are going to find something in College Town.

I am guessing this dorm is a gothic?
it is very possibly there will be no laundry. you just have to walk over to building that does have laundry, and all the buildings are closer together than they are on north so it’s not that bad of a trudge.
I am not sure what to say about spiders. I guess there is the occasional bug or spider web, but no infestations or anything like that! the gothics don’t have beautiful interiors, but I don’t think they’re hazardous or dirty.

I think the Gothics are beautiful - loved in one as a freshman and LOVED it - thought that was what you did when you went to an Ivy-league school…dd lived in one for a semester and liked it…

memphismom, did either you or your daughter live in Founders Hall, or know anything about that particular building? Thanks!

I don’t live in Founders Hall, but I have a friend who does. He likes it. He has a nice single and it’s pretty big, too (singles in the gothics are usually larger than the main wings).

Thanks! I think her single will be pretty small, but she’ll make it work. I think she got one of the very last singles on West, so no complaints. Everything on West seemed to go very quickly.

Everyone and their mothers know about West, and unfortunately there aren’t enough spots for every second-year student in that particular part of campus. Annoying, but not much can be done about it.
