Hey guys! So I just got the housing booklet in the mail today, and I'm a little confused about how it all works!

For one, I was wondering if you any of guys know anything about the Choices floors. I'm not into drinking/heavy partying and after hearing that NYU offered floors that are alcohol free, I'm actually kinda considering it. But I'm kinda worried that all the kids on the floor might be more of the sheltered, socially-awkward, shy kids you know? I still wanna be able to meet lots of fun and outgoing people, but I just don't want to end up rooming with somebody who will stumble into our room at like 3 in the morning puking everywhere.

And also, if I end up choosing an exploration/theme based floor, when/how do they organize all the trips and activities and stuff like that?

Sorry for all the questions! It's just the first time I've heard about all these options, makes me super excited! :)

they’re not socially awkward. some of them choose Choices cause they want to be in a certain dorm, heh. someone i knew who was Choices had severe asthma and didn’t want to be on a floor where anyone smoked because it would seep through the walls and heating vents. and yes, some of them might just want to be on a floor where they know that no one will be partying. that doesn’t mean they won’t want to party somewhere else.

the RA of your Explorations floor arranges everything. they get a budget for their activities and they decide.

isnt nyu supposed to be no alcohol whatsoever no matter what dorm?

if you’re in an upperclassmen dorm, and there’s people in your individual suite who are 21, alcohol is allowed. you’re an adult in the eyes of the law. i’m 21, i have a minifridge with alcohol in it.

most CHOICES floors are in upperclassmen buildings.

I have a question about Explorations - Are the activities things that the students would have to pay for? A few of the Explorations communities sound interesting, but I’m a bit worried about how money will work out, and so I don’t want to commit to something that will end up costing a lot.

NYU pays for the activities. the RAs get a budget and they use it at their discretion. at most, you might have to pay for MetroCards to get to any activities that happen to be off campus. but NYU pays most, if not all, of the event costs.

they’ll tell you upfront if there’s an additional cost. (“bring a metrocard!” “pay only $5 to see this Broadway play!” etc)

Do you know anything about NYU The Show? It sounds really interesting, but what are the kids like who are in it? Do Exploration programs help to make friends?

Does anyone know anything about the F.A.M.E. exploration floor at Brittany??

I lived in a non-Choices part of a Choices floor (don’t ask), and I can definitely tell you, those kids were not socially awkward at all.

As for Explorations, I definitely think it helps people make friends. Granted, it also stirs up drama since you’re in a tight-knit group of students, but it’s manageable.

My explorations was a bust. We never did anything faculty advisor didn’t like the RA so we never really met or went anywhere. I had fun living in Rubin though and met alot of friends. My room mate and I hit it off and we are still good friends in our sophmore year. We both studied abroad this semester in different locations but got together in europe.
