Housing Options for a Grad Student

Hello, in the fall I will be moving from socal to start at SCU as a grad student and was curious what the options are for housing. After some research I can tell that prices for any apartments in the area are horrible. Being that on campus housing comes out to only 1400-1600 per month for the whole year is it worth it to stay on campus vs looking for a place off campus? Also, how are the chances of landing a spot in on campus housing, given that the apps are already due Ideally I would like to pay less than a $1000 and live alone. I am willing to live in a bad city/ghetto if necessary but from what I have seen so far all the cities around SCU are good cities (Oakland is too far). I don’t care about living conditions since all I will be doing is studying/interning/working, so are there some unconventional ideas for accomplishing this? As a last resort I will probably try to live with someone else but I would be willing to pay a little more to live alone. I am not familiar with the area so any help from people who live there would be appreciated.

Anyone?

@svinvader I suppose you browsed this page and is what you are referring to about pricing?

Ya, living alone in the many areas in the Bay for $1000 a month is challenging. Check apartment listings (apartments.com) for Santa Clara and Sunnyvale - while high everywhere, there are some “less than desirable” type complexes (not crime ridden, just older areas and buildings) that may have something. You can put in min/max $ and one bedroom. Otherwise call SCU housing and ask if there is anywhere they post rooms available near campus.

I went on site and found this which frankly looks to good to be true but here it is:

Downtown San Jose in not far there may be places along the Alameda or in the area of Japantown.

Bay Area housing is nuts. I’d probably go for the on campus housing.

@cadreamin Yeah, that listing is absolutely too good to be true. It’s either a scam or a typo. No way that’s real.

@“SC Anteater” Ya, right?!

OP - Good point above, at least apply for on campus and see what options you get, I guess the only thing you would lose is housing app fee. Better than having no housing at all.

@CADREAMIN are you a current student? I was trying to get a feel on how students in the area approach housing. Where I did my UG most students did off campus housing but being in SV is a different story. I will check out the areas that you mentioned. That posting is obviously is a scam plus I am looking for the fall so I can’t really apply to any apartments right now.

No I have an undergrad there. We are just used to paying around $1500/month for college housing in some parts of California. Sad but true, but that is also for a nice place with more than one person.

I honestly don’t know where to find inexpensive singles and ya, Oakland is waaaaay too far anyway. Some areas of San Jose may be worth looking at, but you would be better off to share something to bring cost down. Call housing and ask if they have any suggestions.

Thank you for the help.
