I know many people who have found roommates and are already starting to fill out the housing application. I was wondering if any current students could give some suggestions on which housing units are good and which are not the best depending on the type of person. I know many of the dorms are the same, but I have not heard any suggestions or any word on Granville Towers. I would love some insight into the housing situation, as I have currently found a roommate but am not sure where to apply for.
Can’t wait to meet you all this fall!
Do a search for Granville on this forum. There have been many posts in the past about Granville Towers.
I view UNC as a snowman. The head is north campus, where the majority of freshmen and sophomores live. On north campus is health services, sports complexes, the hospital, I think a dining hall, among other things. In the middle ( the body) is The Pit, the bookstore, another dining hall, libraries, classes, etc. The bottom of the snowman is south campus, and this is where Granville is, among other buildings. It’s right by frat row ( I think) and Franklin Street. Granville looks decent from the outside. I was told that many students who join Greek life live there. My daughter lives in a suite on north campus and is happy. Next year she will remain on north campus in another suite but in a different dorm across from where she is now. She is very happy and says it’s convenient. She says north campus is social, but quiet and not crazy- not sure if you view this as good or bad.
I think my map of the school is right. If not, I apologize.
@noname87 I am not looking at Granville alone, thank you for the helpful insight though!
Does anyone have any experience with Koury, Hinton James, or Ehringhaus?
Oops- seems I mixed up south and north…
Most freshman live on the south campus and will probably eat most meals at the Rams Head dining hall. Freshman that live on the north campus will likely eat most meals at the Top of Lenoir which is by the Pit. I believe that students at Granville have a require meal plan at the Granville Towers.
At some point UNC will send a housing brochure describing the options. The housing web site has lots of info including floor plans.
Thank you guys! Yes, I will check out the brochure when it comes but it is also good to get a student perspective.
The brochure for last year is still on the housing web site for reference. The updated version has not been posted yet.
From a tour guide: most freshmen live on south campus ( this is where I messed up earlier). Sophomores mostly live on south while north campus is mostly upper classmen. Granville is a mix and is off campus. To me it looks like Granville is on the edge of campus. The tour guides usually tell people that the worst dorm is Craige ( south campus) and if you can live there, it will only get better. I have seen Craige. It’s in a good location and has been recently renovated, but it has cinder block walls and does take some getting used to- but it’s really not awful. The dorms mentioned above are nicer ( opinion) and I know somebody in Hinton James who loved it.
