Housing Options.. What's the best dorm?

I have to apply for housing by today.
1) Which dorm is has the best stuff?
2) Which dorm is the closest to the campus?

3) Which dorm is the most popular?

Clark Kerr probably has the best stuff (nicest furniture, best food, prettiest location). Among the units, unit 2 is the best looking, but unit 1 has the same furniture. The mini-suites in units 1 and 2 have the best unit furniture. Unit 2 bathrooms are a tad nicer, too.

see the “Rank the Units” thread, it talks about all the dorms, not just the units.

I don’t think there’s a most popular, but most people go for the units, namely 1 and 3. Engineers/science people probably choose foothill more often than other majors, but I don’t think its terribly popular. People tend to just get put in unit 4 or CKC if they run out of space in the units.

(I just have this weird thing about laundry, because i’m lazy and hate lugging a huge bag around) Unit 3 has the least convenient laundry of the units (in the central building basement), but units 1 and 2 are the same, and very convenient (in each building). I don’t know about most of unit 4 (foothill laundry is similar to unit 3), and I don’t know about CKC for laundry.

that was really helpful… thanks

It says that
Unit 1 has African American and Native American program
Unit 2 has Asian Pacific American program
Unit 3 has Latino program.

does that mean that like most of unit 1 have AA and NA people and most of unit 2 have asians?

clark kerr represent

Laundry is a non-issue if you get a laundry basket with wheels, but I’ll go over it anyways (as I am procrastinating from studying…)
Unit 1 and 2 have laundry rooms on floors 2, 6, and 8 off every high rise.
Unit 1 and 2 minisuites have one central laundry room on the ground floor or something like that
Unit 3 - see post above
Unit 4 Foothill - LaLoma has a central laundry room in Building 1 and Hillside has a central laundry room in Building 7
Unit 4 Stern - I’ve never been to Stern’s laundry room, but they have a central laundry room somewhere, also they are not too far from the Hillside laundry room
Unit 4 Bowles -there are two small Unit 1/2 sized laundry rooms on the eastwing of the fourth floor

All the laundry machines everywhere are the same ****ty WEB brand, so they all break down frequently (and then you have to put in a maintenance tag and someone fixes it). Some people like the central Unit 1/2 laundry room system because it means less walking, but if the laundry machines are broken or used up, you have to walk to another laundry room. The benefit of the central laundry rooms is that there are a ton of machines, so unless you are doing laundry during peak hours or when a lot of machines are broken, you don’t have to do all that much extra walking

Unit 4 is the closest to campus.

Room size:
Unit 1, 2, and 3 are equally small
Unit 1, and 2 minisuites are a bit bigger supposedly
Bowles, Stern, Foothill, and Clark Kerr have the largest rooms, though for CKC and FH you’ve got to pay more
Bowles quads on average are larger than two Unit doubles, and you pay less (Bowles is the best deal when it comes to the $ to ft^2 ratio).

Unit 1 is the best/closest to campus/most popular.

Get a regular double your first year, it’s wayyy more social than the Foothill/CKC/Units minisuites. Cheaper too. That’s the advice I followed and I don’t regret it ONE BIT.

I live at Clark Kerr but I find that I end up spending most of my time on campus or visiting people at Unit 1. Clark Kerr’s nice, but not everything’s rennovated yet; Some dorms still look like garbage. On top of that, it’s really far from campus, especially if you have to go to Engineering side (Evans, Etcheverry, Mccone, etc.)

Unit 3 is the closest and I think it’s the best in terms of amenities, closeness, social atmosphere, etc. I chose that one and I stayed there for a day during OHP, and liked it. I get hungry often cuz I’m petite lol so I like how there’s restaurants and stuff close by + u dont have to walk far to get to the actual campus. Clark Kerr might be nicer, have better food, and all that, but if ur not willing to walk, it’ll be a hassle. and you can eat where ever within the dining halls. So, I’d say go with Unit 3.

Unit 3 is close to campus, but it is not the closest. Unit 4 is closest to campus. Crossing the street and reaching campus is closer to campus that walking a block and reaching campus. Yes they are on different sides of campus, but Unit 4 is still objectively the closest to campus.

but unit 4 is so sprawling, you can’t guarantee that you’ll be right across the street…

well…yeah but unit 4 doesn’t have a piano. Although it DOES have a ping pong table! Maybe Unit 4 is a better choice. or the bessst choice. And unit 4 has more singles so u have a better chance.

Unit 4 has at least four pianos that I know of. They have a really nice one in Stern and they have three others in Bowles, Hillside, and LaLoma.

Bowles has a broken pingpong table, Stern has none, Hillside has one, don’t know about LaLoma. Everyone has access to the Hillside one.

Freshman who do not have physical disabilities, will not get singles, so don’t apply for one

each unit high rise has a ping pong table, and there are private music rooms in the units. you just trade your key, and no one can even disturb you. in foothill, the piano is out in a huge room where everyone can hear you. it’s really awkward.

Unit 4 is different. They allow singles for people who don’t have physical disabilities as well, so that’s the cool thing about it. Although, probably EVERYONE will apply for it.

^Unit 4 has non-ADA singles, except they don’t let freshman have them. RAs have told me, if the lottery program RSSP uses to give housing contracts accidentally gives a freshman a single, they will override it and give something else. Only sophomores, juniors, and seniors can get singles, in the case of being non-ADA.

Which suites are better: the ones in Unit 1 or Unit 2? I’m a transfer student, planning on majoring in the humanities and was thinking of Unit 1 suites because it’s closer but hear that there are more transfers in Unit 2.

Although I’ll be an undergrad, I still want a sociable atmosphere and feel like Wada and Channing won’t be as sociable and that the regular dorms in the units will be too social(and full of freshman).

Any suggestions? Thanks!

The suites in Unit 1 and 2 are mostly sophomores, and a couple of freshmen and transfers. It’s probably more sociable than Wada/Channing, but I think as a transfer, you probably wouldn’t fit in well with the younger students. Wada is your best bet for a sociable and non-freshman atmosphere. From what I hear, Channing is quieter than Wada.

^Thanks for the input!
