Housing Packet

We sent in the deposit for my daughter for fall 2011 about amonth ago. When should we expect to recieve the housing packet?

Probably Jan/Feb time frame – be sure to note the due date for the housing deposit – the dates are not the same for everyone. You don’t want to miss the due date and risk losing the dorm guarantee.

You can’t even request honors housing until May, at least that was the case last year.

Honors/Space application comes later. I recall sending the housing deposit months before the Space application was available. Just make note of the due date of the housing deposit, they have different dates depending upon when you sent in your deposit for your student’s enrollment at PITT.

D2 has been accepted to the Honors college but the decision of whether or not she will attend Pitt is a long ways off since we’re OOS and though she got some merit aid, we will need to compare with other schools come April. Since the $300 enrollment fee is nonrefundable, would there be any problem with her waiting until mid-April and all decisions and FA/merit is known, for her to turn in the enrollment form and then apply for Honors housing?

Thanks for any responses!

The honors housing application has been due later the last couple of years, which should allow your daughter to weigh her options in April. If I remember correctly, the honors housing application had a due date (perhaps in May?) and applicants were accepted based on essays and not when they arrived (as long as they were in by the deadline).

^^Thanks very much, thank goodness she’d opt for Honors if she attends!

I’m amazed at how differently housing is dealt with between schools. Pitt is tough because you need to turn in both the acceptance fee and housing fee, both of which are substantial and nonrefundable, very early for regular housing. Our IS public lets you submit for housing with a small fee before you’re even accepted! And another public lets you reserve housing with a small refundable fee before sending in the acceptance fee. I guess D1 had fewer rolling schools, so we didn’t have to pay attention to this aspect as closely, one more detail to keep track of! Thanks again.

When did Pitt change to the non-refundable housing deposit? Their acceptance fee was non-refundable but the housing deposit was refundable when DS went through the process.

^^^My mistake MTnest, the Pitt housing deposit is refundable by a deadline which is in the summer, so a reasonable amount of time for a decision (except possibly if one is on a WL). I was concerned about the non-refundable admissions fee and carelessly included the housing as well.

Yes, schools all have their own rules for housing and it is one more thing to keep track off. I don’t believe you will have a problem with housing as long as you send the housing deposit by the due date. The sooner you send in the admissions deposit, the quicker the housing deposit will be due. We almost missed our due date since we didn’t realize Pitt had different housing due dates – good thing they sent a postcard reminding us that the housing deposit was due soon!
