Housing-"Partner Student"?

Did anyone else get an email saying that you are considered a partner student and a housing slot has been reserved in your name? Me and my two other friends that got into poly got these and we don’t really know what they mean. Is this to stop the housing problems that poly had last year, so that specific students get priority or is this what everyone gets?

I've never heard of this, Sora! If you don't find out tonight, I'll give the housing office a call tomorrow and see what they have to say. Congrats on getting in though! :)

I would appreciate that greatly saabicia. BTW, my girlfriend, who also got in, and I will be visiting Poly this Saturday. If anyone else is going to be there maybe we could meet up and tour the school together.

Here is the exact email:

Dear Adam:

Congratulations on being admitted to Cal Poly! You have been designated as a Cal Poly Partner Student. Because you are a Partner Student, a housing space has been reserved for you. To take advantage of this reserved space you must follow the appropriate steps beginning March 13th at 9am when the housing application opens online (your deadline is March 27th).

Accept admissions offer on the 'Admissions' tab on MyCalPoly (only students who plan to attend Cal Poly should accept our offer of admission). NOTE: The Housing Application System becomes available on the following business day after you 'accept' our offer of admission.

Complete the online housing application on the 'Housing' tab on MyCalPoly.

Print, sign, and return housing licensing agreement

Provide housing payment.

Please note: Payment and housing license are due by Thursday, March 27th, 2008 (if you are expecting any financial aid, just check the financial aid box on the housing application for your payment).

After March 27th, your space is no longer reserved and housing will be on a 'first-come, first-served' basis after that date.

Hey Sora, I called the Housing office while at school today and they told me to call Admissions. So I called Admissions but they didn't open until noon! But I was in class! So I just called Admissions again and this rude lady told me that you have to call yourself. So yeah. :(

Call 805-756-1111 then press 2 when the recording comes on and then press 7 when the next recording comes on.

And just say "what's a partner student?" and hopefuly they'll be a little more helpful. :-S

Sorry! :(

Dang, I just got your message and they are already closed so I have to wait till Monday. I can't believe she wouldn't just tell you. Someone must have been in a bad mood today eh =). Well thanks for the try. I appreciate it. I'll give them a call on Monday and post up what they say.

I'm really surprised no one else knows what this is. It can't be anything special because of academics or anything because I only have a 3.74GPA with a 29 ACT, my friend has the same stats and my other friend has a 3.4 with a 1690 on the SAT, and we all got it. I haven't heard of anyone else getting the same message though. If anyone could shine some light on this situation before Monday that would be great.

Did your friend enroll, apply for housing and name you as the partner?

-sara

Nope. Both friends are girls so that wouldn't work anyway and neither put me as a partner.

Did any of you apply for financial aid?

I did not and one friend did not. One friend did.

So a partner student is a student who graduates from a partner school to cal poly. I don't know how a school becomes a partner school. But Cal Poly sets aside some housing for students from its partner schools which gives those students guaranteed housing. That's what the admissions rep told me.

So the partner school is a high school? I've heard of colleges that have connections to local high schools.

-sara

Tonight I ask my principal as well as the college counselor for our school and none of them knew our school was a "partner school." Wierd much?

Interesting to hear about “partner schools” here. i had no clue, but when talking to an admisisons officer i learned that cal poly and my hs are partner schools. which means that i have a better chance of admission, and i have guranteed housing. sounds pretty sweet haha

This document talks about “partner schools”.

Apparently partner schools are part of Cal Poly’s efforts to increase “diversity” and students from these school do get some advantages.

Out of curiosity, where do you live? Or what h.s. school do you attend? Do they list the partner schools anywhere?

It looks like there are 191 partner high schools for Cal Poly.

“During the past few years, Cal Poly has developed a special relationship with 191
“Partner” high schools, all of which have a large percentage of first generation
students as well as historically low college-going rates. We help students at these
schools to learn about Cal Poly and encourage them to complete the rigorous course
of study necessary to be competitive in Cal Poly’s admissions selection process.”

Just found this, but it’s from 1991 when there were just the first 32 “partner” schools.

“Those partner high schools include Santa Maria High School, Lompoc High School, Cabrillo Senior High School, Salinas High School, Calexico High School, the California Academy of Math and Science, Chula Vista Senior High School, Coachella Valley High School, Dorsey Senior High School, Etiwanda High School, James Logan High School, the Los Angeles Center of Enriched Study, Crenshaw Senior High School, Garfield Senior High School, Roosevelt Senior High School, Newark Memorial High School, Fremont Senior High School, Ramona Senior High School, Alisa High School, Thurgood Marshall Academy, Andrew P. Hill High School and Wasco High School.”

“The university will select 10 more partner high schools for the program over the next year, Hellenbrand said.”
