Housing/PittStart advice

What are the best housing choices for freshmen? Also, how is the Forbes Hall UHC housing? Specifically, how are the students and RAs at Forbes? Which housing choices have the most/least strict RAs?

Regarding PittStart, when do most students schedule their session?

-best housing choice for you depends on your personality
-there’s no one housing choice that has the strictest RAs
-most students schedule their PittStart during the summer

What kinds of personalities do the Forbes, Litchfield, Sutherland, Holland, and Lothrop Halls befit? Are the students in Forbes too uptight? The reason for my asking is that I want to room in a hall with students that are sociable. If anyone has any experiences to share, please feel free.

I don’t have any experience with Forbes.

However, Towers is in all likelihood the most social dorm, and I’d recommend it above anything else.

Despite the fact that it has larger rooms than Towers, Forbes seems like it would be a bit of a walk from all of my classes. I don’t plan on rooming in Lothrop or Holland (I’ve heard negative reviews about these two choices). As of right now, my decision is leaning toward Towers, but does anyone know anything about Sutherland? I know that the Sutherland suites house 5-8 people, but the notion of rooming with that many people seems ludicrous to me.

Sutherland is merely okay. The suites are alright; you’ll only have one roommate, and you’ll share the bathroom with 5 / 7 other people. There’s only two 8-person suites and two 6-person suites per floor, so the rest of them are doubles with shared bathrooms (2 rooms/4 people to a bathroom.)

Overall I still think Towers is a much better choice. If you’re in the Honors College, you probably won’t fit in with all the athletes at Sutherland. The jock vibe got old after awhile (and I’m not in the Honors College.)

Forbes isn’t that much further, trust me. It’s definitely closer than Sutherland.

I chose Tower A as my first choice, and Tower C as my second. I didn’t want to choose B because I heard it has a reputation for being rowdy. How likely is it that I’ll get my first choice (provided that I don’t get honors housing)? I’d rather room in a double in Tower A than a single in Tower C.

Speaking from experience, the chances of getting first choice for freshman seemed to be hit or miss. Results for housing came out during my Pittstart, and I brought my laptop, so I watched about 30 people get their assignments on my laptop. It seemed that maybe a handful got their first choice (mostly, it seemed to be that those who requested Tower B got Sutherland (boys) or Holland (girls), those who requested Sutherland got Tower B (mix)). A few got Lothrop. As for Forbes, I’d imagine it’d be less likely not to get it, as it’s drawing from a smaller pool of applicants (honor’s).

Towers can be somewhat “rowdy” but in my opinion only slightly moreso than the other dorms (Sutherland and Holland). Typically, only on the weekends is it “rowdy” anyway - during the week it was chill, at least on my floor. It was also nice to have all my classes close by.

I requested Suthland. Looking back, I couldn’t be any happier that I got Tower B. Forbes and Sutherland were too far for me (even if Forbes is only a “few blocks more” - about 5 blocks - it would have gotten annoying to me) and Tower B was a great experience - coming from someone who doesn’t party or drink.

Also: no specific dorm has the “least strict” RAs. RAs are people and each have their own level of tolerance, and they change year by year. For instance, in Tower B, on floor 6 (I believe) there was a “hell RA” who would write you up if she even smelled alcohol or could hear your music. But on floor 13, the RA would just walk by, say “Hey guys, I’m shutting your door,” do so, and walk away.

Remembering either yours or another student’s comments earlier this year about just how hit or miss housing preferences seem to be, I was half tempted to advise my D to preference Holland (she prefers co-ed) in order to increase her chances of getting Towers (her 1st choice).

Everyone I know who was assigned to Holland really liked it. Great location. No air conditioning.

Towers >>> Sutherland for convenience. Sutherland rooms are bigger though.

Lothrop is good for nursing.

Towers is a great place to meet people, and it’s right in the middle of everything. However, the rooms are pretty small. And people can use hangers to unlock each others’ doors, so don’t make enemies, haha.

TOWERS is a great place to meet friends. There are posted quiet hours and the RAs make sure the rules are enforced. Also, the library is a quick walk from Towers. Towers has great dining choices, as well. The rooms are the typical freshman double.

There are many choices for freshmen. Check out the housing site and when you visit go to Panther central and ask questions.

Some dorms have a/c, some dorms have fans
Some dorms have elevators, some don’t
some dorms have nice gyms and nicer laundry facilities
some have dining options, some don’t

I do think the Towers have the best central location for freshmen

Well, I requested Tower A as my first choice and Tower C as my second even though I really don’t want to be in a room by myself. I just don’t want to be in Holland or Sutherland. I’ve heard bad reviews about the former, and regarding the latter, I don’t want to be in a room with too many people. As for Tower B, I don’t want a dorm that can get really “rowdy” at times. There are times to have fun and times to be serious. For that very reason, I chose Tower A because it was social yet not too “rowdy”. I also applied for honors housing in Forbes.

Seeing as to how I chose Tower A as my first choice and Tower C as my second, is it unlikely that I will end up getting Tower A? Is selection random or do they often put people in dorms that they did not give preference to? Would choosing another dorm as my first choice have given me a better chance at getting Tower A? I applied rather early for housing (2-3 weeks ago). Would this affect where I am placed?

bump…anyone?

You could call Panther Central and ask them about the housing assignment process. I’m not sure how these things are decided.

Confounded, I just think you just have to wait and see. Wherever you end up, you’ll make it work. It’s just for one school year, which is about eight months.

is it necessary to have a parent with you at pittstart? ive been to the city/campus so many times so i know my way around pretty well, but is there anything you need a parent for? im leaning towards going independently to gain my own footing i guess but what do you guys recommend? also im staying over night on campus if that makes any difference. thanks

^^^^No, it is not necessary to have a parent with you for PittStart. Two years ago, we dropped off D1 and came back and got her after her regisration was complete on that second day.

( I guess I should add that she was a pre-pharmacy major and knew exactly what courses she wanted and needed ahead of time.)

^^^
We were at PittStart a week ago with our daughter and the only thing she needed from us was some (more) money for a T-shirt. We ended up leaving her there and then picking her up later when she was finished. If your parents can handle you going by yourself it shouldn’t be a problem for you. BTW - there was 2-3 (out of about 30) students there without their parents at the nursing PittStart.

I mean housing shouldn’t be a big deal for me I just don’t know how likely one is to get his/her first choice. The reason I’m asking is because my twin brother is going to OSU, and he has a 99% chance of getting his first choice.
