Which do you prefer and which are bigger?

Thanks in advance!

plaza because tis bigger and you have your own bathroom and there is ac

come to a housing tour and you'll actually see the rooms

plaza!!! PLAZAS ALLL THE WAY! if you are worried about social life, go make it or find it on campus. i value my living space more than the social life from living in a hall

look here:

i love living in my res hall. you can prop your door open and friends as well as strangers will come into your room to talk, but if you dont want to socialize you can just close your door. i love having a huge bathroom and singing in the shower with 3 guys harmonizing along with me hahah. res halls are the best.

You cannot study in your room or in the lounge in a residential hall.

well that kinda depends on the floor your're living on...but yeah, you can always study at the libraries, study rooms, etc etc

if you're local and a lot of your friends are coming to ucla, then id suggest a plaza.
if you're OOS or don't go home on the weekends, id suggest a hall.
also if you need constant energy then id suggest hall.

PLAZA
pros:
-bigger rooms, more space
-you get your own bathroom instead of sharing w/ the whole floor
-a lot more quiet
-rooms are nicer/newer, don't smell weird like some of the halls
-you get AC/heater

cons:
-VERY anti-social (at least my floor is. but I heard some aren't that bad)

HALLS
pros:
-considerably cheaper
-very social, easy to make friends

cons:
-you share a bathroom with the whole floor
-very cramped rooms (for triples)
-there is no way in hell you can possibly study in your room or in your lounge (my friend from a hall comes to my lounge to study all the time)
-no AC/heater

I think for a first year, it would be better to live in a hall to get the whole "college experience". I live in a plaza right now, and I kinda regret it. But once you're a second year, a plaza would be a nice change, because you probably have a group of friends already, and you won't need to live in a hall to meet people. But yeah, I really love how my lounge is always so empty/quiet (except for like hte two weeks before finals... it gets bad sometimes), that way I won't have to go out of my way to find a place to study. Plus having your own bathroom is really nice too.

I did...

Is housing first come first serve? A lot of people are saying that even thought online it says that housing is random and not based upon who submits housing plans first, a lot of my classmates say that it is implied that I should apply for housing as soon as possible, before all the "good" rooms run out.

I did call UCLA Housing, but the female rep was wishy washy with her answer and told me to do it when I submit my SIR. However, I'm still undecided on which school to attend....

So, is housing really just a lottery, with a guarantee that freshmen can dorm (but the details of the rooming will be unknown), or is it a "Speedy Gonzalo" thing that I should do quickly?

Pituoe, housing is not first come, first serve. It is on a random basis. With housing, you just have to count on pure luck.

As for plazas versus a hall, I currently live in a plaza with two female roommates and three roommates next door. Our bathroom is suprisingly not occupied when I go to use our shared bathroom but I hate it when one of my female roommates is using the sink to do her make up and I cannot brush my teeth and get to class. C'est merde. :( So, basically, the downside is that you only have ONE bathroom. Including the one other public one on the floor...which doesn't have a shower.

Plazas FTW! You can make friends anytime through clubs and activities; roommates are not necessarily "instant" friends.

Please, like they would know :P
j/k
(anyone I know?)

Lol don't rush in making decisions! I didn't send it in till like a couple days before the deadline, and I got my first choice (which happened to be a res hall triple :P)

let's face it, plazas win for everything

Res hall is good if you want to always be with people, or if you're antisocial and want to be forced to meet people

Suite is good if you already are established and want some privacy and space, or if you're antisocial and want to stay that way. Having lived in a suite this year, I really had to make an effort to get involved and meet people. I'm a veteran.

Plaza for everyone else :)

Actually, I visited both today...and I found that the bathroom was pretty much the only difference between the two. I don't think any option is louder or quieter...that probably depends on the people living in that particular hall =P The only thing that probably makes the residential halls more "social" is the fact that you're forced to leave your room to go to the bathroom.

Also, one thing with the bathrooms...in the plazas, 6 people can share ONE bathroom...and that kinda sucks, especially since I'm a girl, and we all know how long it takes to get ready in the morning =P But with the residential halls, you have more choices in umm, bathrooms and showers (if one is dirty or smells bad or something...choose another! XD)...and it's not like everyone's using the bathrooms at the same time. Just my two cents ^^

^very true. shared bathroom is kind of a gamble because the bathrooms get cleaned once a week. also, if you get people who drink a lot, just pray that cleaning day is friday.

Lovelyday, as I mentioned before, I have 5 roommates using a shared bathroom, and we have no problem sharing it since we seldom start our days around the same time. My roommate and I had a problem though where on Fridays we'd have to use the bathroom. But I just used the sink next to our sink. It's really not a big deal. Unless housekeeping doesn't clean it, which happened during December and our bathroom wasn't cleaned for like...3 weeks.

yeah, all six of you will rarely start classes and stuff at the same time. Surprisingly, I never ever had trouble with shower conflicts or sink usage with my 5 other roommates/suitemates. The shower was always unoccupied when I needed it. Except for maybe once.
