Housing: Plaza vs Res Hall

Would you guys recommend living in the plaza freshman year? The plazas are a lot nicer than the resident halls, but I heard that they are more seclusive and less social.

there have been SOOOO MANY threads on this! browse through and read the old topics!

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=175156

i dont see how plazas are less social. touring both, they look EXACTLY the same. the only difference is , plazas have private bathrooms. so you'd miss out on seeing your friends at the bathroom, big deal?

Actually, the previosu post went off topic and does not address this discussion. It went off to talk about triples in residential halls, not res halls vs plazas.

I also get some priority for housing, so I am less concerned with triples.

Are plazas a lot less social than the residential halls?

yes, plaza's are a lot less social. Mainly because own bathroom, so you stay in ur room more. Also imagine a floor of like 100 people vs a floor of like 20-30 people. IF your like frat/soriroty person it doesnt matter cause u'll make outside friends , but if your normal/nerdy plaza is a lot less social.

dont get Delta Terrace, most anti-social place

like i've mentioned in previous threads. it depends A LOT on the people on your floor, so your plaza floor may end up being pretty social or completely dead. its just your luck of the draw.

Fact: Most of the socializing in the residential halls occurs during trips to/within/from the dorm bathrooms. If you have your own private bathroom, it naturally eliminates most of the incentive to leave your room and meet people along the way.

I'd like the socialization of the res houses - but triples in res halls (I saw dykstra) looks friggin scary!

yeah....i generally don't socialize when i'm in bathrooms.

The plazas are your best dorm bet. I was in Sunset Village for two years and loved the proximity to the Hilltop Store, Bruin Cafe, and Puzzles. ^^

In my experience, I lived in a res hall (Hedick) my first year and plaza (DeNeve Evergreen) my second year. I'll just say this, my first year here I knew everyone on my floor, even if there were some I didn't talk to very often. My second year, there was definitely a portion of the floor, probably 1/3 to 1/2 that I didn't know at all. Even if you don't talk to people in the bathroom (and I did talk to them in there lol), having a public bathroom forces you to at least get up out of your room a couple times a day and pass by everyone in the hall. You'll at least have to bump into some people or pass by some open doors and have some social interaction with the world. In a plaza it's much, much easier to just lock the door, open the books/throw on the headphones/turn on the Playstation and not interact with anyone pretty much the entire day.

BTW, triples in plazas are nearly as cramped as a triple in a res hall. The only thing saving it (at least in DeNeve) is the little hallway between the bathroom and the door.

aw...hehe michi used "^^" =x Haven't seen anyone else use them here; so cute!

By the way, how does a residential hall look scary? (locknload's post)

I can attest to this from personal experience.

im guessing that you can be social in a plaza too. if you make the effort. it appears that res hall just makes it easier.

and my idea of socialization isnt having a casual chat while showering/peeing next to someone.

Just that triples in the res halls looked super cramped!

Well one of the main reasons why people consider plazas less social is the small floors. I'm assuming that this doesn't apply to the new high rise plazas, right?

still applies somewhat...a big floor means nothing if no one comes out of their rooms.

Yeah but then that just goes back to the luck of the draw thing depending on who you're with, which is independent of which housing type. But with a big floor, extremes are less likely to happen.
