Housing Policy vs Night Life

So I read that whenever you go into your dorm building you have to scan your ID and there’s a security guard there 24/7. So what if I’m coming back hella wasted at 3 in the morning and it’s pretty obvious that I’ve been drinking, is this dude gonna arrest me since he’s supposedly there 24/7?

Oh and how does this work if I wanna bring a lady friend back to my dorm, if they don’t live in my dorm building can they still use their ID to get into mine?

Was really looking forward to a welcome change from high school where I don’t have to worry about looking sober whenever I get home.

Some guards are pretty chill and will let you go, others will call the ambulance and make them take you to the ER. Night guards in Warren are worse than others. In general, if you can get youself together to swipe in and not make a huge scene/puke all over the place, you should be ok. If your lady friend is a BU student with a dining plan, she can swipe in with her terrier card. Otherwise you have to sign her in and give them her ID. Both are only possible until (I think) 1 am, later than that you’re out of luck.

yeah hows bu in terms of sex between students?

If someone hears you then it’s not cool and someone will probably complain to the RA. Most likely, as a freshman, you’ll have a roommate too so if you’re coming back in the middle of the night, chances are they’ll be asleep. Take that into account too. If you kick your roommate out of the room at 3 AM you can bet they’ll complain to the RA.

Alright so looks like freshman year is ****ed unless I find another place to sleep. What about the red brick specialty housing for sophomore year? Are there any RA’s living in those, are there any stupid sign-in processes, any security guard, ect. ect.

What is with the infatuation with drinking? Can’t you just not drink and not waste your time while you’re at BU?

no security in the brownstones. I think you can sign people in at all times though, even in the freshman dorm. and security is not that bad…you shouldn’t be coming back “hella wasted” drink responsibly. you can still have a good time and not be sloppy drunk. the security guards only call the RA on call for kids who are making a scene, or trying to complete the simple task of swiping their id card and failing. if you’re so drunk you can’t do that, you probably shouldn’t be going back to your room alone anyway. get it together enough to swipe in and you’ll be fine.

as far as sex goes, I’ve heard a few horror stories of disrespectful roommates (on both ends), but I think if you are mature and talk to yours before hand or work out a system, most things go well. just try to be considerate and respectful…that’s what living in a dorm is all about. I find that most people are very understanding if you say you want the room to yourself for a bit. make friends on your floor so you can hang there in the (probably likely) event you get sexiled.

motion, you should probably get used to kids in college wanting to drink or you’re going to be very frustrated indeed. drinking doesn’t have to be a waste of time.

NiklasK, there are RAs in all dorms, even the brownstones. And while you don’t have to sign someone into a brownstone or swipe your ID, you can’t have overnight guests without permission. If you’re a Freshman, you’re not going to get a single. So if you’re going to bring girls over, have some kind of compromise with your roommate.

you only have to have verbal permission from your roommates though, once you don’t have to sign someone in

Honestly, if you can just pull yourself together for the 30 seconds it takes to get from the escalator through security, you should be fine. Yes, it’s lame that the security guards can bust you for being drunk, but neither I nor any of my friends ever got into trouble. One time I basically had to carry one of my friends through the gate because she was too far gone to walk on her own. Then again, I’ve also seen people getting carted out of the building on stretchers flanked by police.

Protip: The same guards work the same buildings, so try to become friendly with them. They will be less likely to give you trouble. The best advice of all is to stay safe.

I agree with Tom. I’ve lived at Hojo for two years and the guards are real friendly to you once you get to know them. They let me go to my room without an ID when I forget it since they know me already.

1) if you’re in a condition to need to go to the emergency room, you should be grateful the guards will send you there

2) sexiling etiquette isn’t particular to BU! it’s not like sex with your roommate in the room (or middle-of-the-night banishment) is acceptable at some schools but not at BU!

haha well sexiling doesn’t have to have a negative connotation…yeah, it sucks to come back at 2 am from the library and find you’re locked out. but if you discuss things beforehand and don’t mind a little inconvenience every now and then (not every night) then everything should be ok.

I lived in two triples freshman and sophomore years and really have no nightmare stories. at least not related to sexiling :)

Just to clarify, in the security dorms, you can have any BU student with a dining plan scan their ID in before 2AM. After 2AM, you can sign them in like you would a non-BU student or off campus student at any other point in the day.

Also, I’d agree with everyone else. People have to be pretty messy to get pulled away by security. If you’re good enough to scan your ID the right way, then you’ll be okay. I’ve even seen people screw that up a few times and get by too. Still, that’s a good general rule to go by…

lol…

warren guards are pretty rediculous. dont do anything suspicious, they will approach you if they even have the SLIGHTEST suspicion that you may swap ideas or be carrying anything illegal.

my friend was probably the most sober out of everyone when we came in, and the guards sent him to the hospital. meanwhile we had some girl literally tripping head over heels while swiping. seeing an ambulance or police car parked out of warren towers every night is a common thing.

if youre a party goer like myself, youll find it beneficial to sleep elsewhere on campus when completely drunk in the event you get caught. the office of residence life isnt very forgiving either (or reasonable for that matter), and you will receive some somewhat serious consequences no matter what the magnitude.

outside of warren though, i havent had a problem with swiping in any other dorms.

I just finished freshman year in warren and these posts above me are all exaggerated. I came back trashed every weekend it’s fine as long as you aren’t belligerent or puking. You just need to swipe in and it’s fine, they aren’t looking to bust you but if you make a scene they might call security but you can just walk away before they get there.

If you come back with a girl/guest if they’re a BU student they can swipe in till 3am I think, and you can sign them in at any time (except during finals). Usually your roommate will understand if you need the room for the night, just make an agreement about it at the beginning of the year. Chances are he’ll need the room too sometimes.

from the lifebook:
. Guests within 575 Commonwealth Avenue, 1019 Commonwealth Avenue, Danielsen Hall, Myles Standish Hall, Shelton Hall, The Towers, Warren Towers, and West Campus residences

a. Between 7 a.m. and 2 a.m., a building resident must sign in all non-residents, whether they are BU students or not. Prior to entering the residence, the resident host’s Terrier Card must be scanned at the security station, and the guest must leave a photo identification card with the residential safety officer.

b. For the purposes of a one-night visit only, between 2 a.m. and 7 a.m., guests must check-in at the security station. A resident must meet guests in the lobby and must escort them into the residence. Prior to entering the residence, the resident host’s Terrier Card must be scanned at the security station, and the guest must leave a photo identification card with the residential safety officer.

c. A resident who wishes to have a guest visit for up to three consecutive nights must request these overnight privileges by submitting an overnight guest pass to the residential safety officer before 2 a.m., of the first night of the intended overnight period. The resident’s roommate(s) or suitemates must provide written consent.

and reslife is not unreasonable…they’re just doing their job. if you’re under 21 and you’re wasted, you’re breaking the law. trust me, it’s better to deal with reslife than BUPD. no matter what you think about the law, at least be careful not to get caught. reslife doesn’t go looking for trouble, it usually finds them.

Yeah the security is going to be there, but they’re not super strict in my opinion. If you can swipe in, you’ll be fine. Just don’t get to the point where you are so drunk you can’t swipe in. I’ve come back at 3 or 4 in the morning, and I was able to get in just fine. Just be smart about what you do. And for the most part, the guards know you’re drinking, but they won’t say anything unless you are completely trashed.
