I'm looking for information & opinions about the housing @ UR while I fill out my preference form.

I am a 22yr old transfer, so somewhat non-trad and will either be looking for a single room or going off campus. Considering that, how should I rank my choices?

Would you be willing to have a single bedroom within a larger suite or apt?

There are very few singles, if any, available in the traditional halls (Burton, Lovejoy, Tiernan, etc). The Phase has suites which contain both singles and doubles, but getting a single bedroom within the suite will be subject to negotiation with the roommates. Suites have shared common areas and bathrooms.

Southside (Valentine, de Kiewiet, Maisonettes) has 2 and 3 bedroom apartments and some single rooms without kitchens. About a 15-20 minute walk from campus. Riverview has 2 and 4 bedroom apts–about 10 minutes from campus via a footbridge across the river. All the apartments have individual (single) bedrooms with shared bathrooms, kitchens and common areas.

Don’t know anything about the availability or pricing of off-campus housing. ResLife maintains a database of off campus housing ([About Off Campus Living : Residential Life : University of Rochester](Overview of Off-Campus Housing : Off-Campus Housing : Office for Residential Life & Housing Services : University of Rochester)), but I’m not sure how useful it is.

A single room in a suite would be great. The ones you mentioned above that have few single rooms are Freshman only (I believe) now so I do not have to worry about that as a transfer. Hopefully I can secure an apartment. Thanks for that info - the reslife packet they sent me is geared almost completely towards freshman and not transfers so I am not working with very much here.

Actually Burton, Lovejoy, and Crosby are upperclass quad dorms. (My D lived in Lovejoy this past year as a soph.)

Gilbert, Hoening and Tiernan are freshman dorms.

For more detail info about which dorms have what, try:

It has descriptions of all the upperclassmen housing options.

WOWM, they should put your posts together into an FAQ. You are the best source of information I’ve seen about a school on any CC board.

LOL! Thanks. I’m a librarian so answering questions is what I do…

mdtransfer… If you are transferring into Rochester in the fall, housing will be very limited. You may want to contact the housing office to determine what your options are.
