Housing Preferences!

So you've been accepted into Berkeley. Happy? Of course! But the next step comes... where to live? There's so many choices, and there's no single place [ha.ha.] to find every single pro and con!

It would be awesome if any entering/veteran/all students could post their opinions!

Unit 2:

Unit 3:

I know, I'm so confused!!! Someone please reply!!!!!!

I've heard Unit 3 is quite sociable and that it's pretty close to campus.

What are the differences between the three Unit dorms??? And I want to go for a triple, so which dorm would be the best? I've heard Clark Kerr is bigger, and with a triple, I think I'd need all the room I can get. Any input would be great!!!!!!!

Also, what exactly is a suite, and what is the difference between a suite and a mini-suite?

Everyone too busy to contribute? :(

Clark Kerr Campus:
-Pro: nice area, quiet, best quality dining hall
-Con: far from campus, not as social as other units
Foothill:
-Pro: very quiet, good if you're physics/engineering (close to north campus)
-Con: known to be very antisocial, crap dining hall.
Bowles [all male]:
-Pro: Best pool table/rec room in berkeley! good room set-up
-Con: all male...ughh. kinda antisocial. close food is at foothill...yuck
Stern [all female]:
-Pro: quiet. Good if that's what you want
-Con: all girls, somewhat antisocial, probably more than foothill, though.
Unit 1:
-Pro: close to campus, great food/shops, crossroads has wide variety of food
-Con: small rooms, noisy, if your in suite then less social.
Unit 2:
-Pro:same as unit 1
-Con: a little farther from campus
Unit 3:
-Pro: same as unit 1, also close to bear-market and cafe 3
-Con: same as unit 1

I've lived in both Bowles and Unit 1. In Bowles I was the A.S.S.H.O.L.E. for one semester, in unit one I didn't participate in anything. Left unit 1 after 1 semester. Now living in studio apartment on north side of campus (thank god!)

If you have any questions about these two places (or others, for that matter), you can PM me.

unit 1 = loud? i heard its the quietest unit

why did you not like it??

No, the quietist units are Unit 4 (foothill, stern, Bowles), and I think Clark Kerr (haven't lived there though so not sure). Compared to Bowles, Unit 1 is much louder. Maybe it's quiet compared to 2 and 3, but it certainly isn't the quietest.

How's Freeborn??? I think I'd really like the substance-free thing. And do we really get any sort of choice in this? Because I've heard many people don't get their top 5 choices.

I'm guessing you would get substance-free housing if you wanted it. I doubt demand for it is that overwhelming.

I'm crossing my fingers for Clark Kerr. Which of the three Units is the best?

Unit 1 is awesome. That's all I have to say. It can be loud or quiet - really, it's whatever you make of it.

Loudest one in my opinion is Unit 3. People there are really good at partying. Obviously, parties aren't exactly quiet.

Not true. There's only one building (~240 people), and 4000 freshmen, so getting a substance free dorm isn't exactly taken for granted. Plus, the people I know who live there don't abide by substance free at all, so there are people who choose substance free just to get Unit 1, since Unit 1 is hard enough to get as a housing offer.

Typically, people should get something in their top five, but some do not, and most people in that situation had to be housed in Clark Kerr or Foothill this year.

If you're a guy, there is a good chance you'll get put in Bowles, even if it isn't in there top five. That's what happened to me, and just about everyone else I knew there. But Bowles does have it's ups, including a great view (best of all the dorms, if you're lucky to be in the right room), nice room set-up: 2 bedrooms on either side of a larger 'study' area, close to north/east campus (good for engineering/science majors), just to name a few.

So, how bad is living in a triple? In one of the Units?

Really i don't think you can determine which of the units is most sociable or loudest, it really can vary from year to year depending on the people inhabiting it.

@SuperDuper!: Just like college admissions, YET there's a section of the forum specifically dedicated to it. ;)

Can someone explain what the difference is between a suite and a regular dorm? What are the pros and cons of choosing a suite over a regular double room?

Clark Kerr Campus:
-Pro: very big
-Con: very far
Foothill:
-Pro: very big, CLOSEST TO CAMPUS, YOU JUST NEED TO CROSS THE STREET AND YOU'RE ON CAMPUS. Foothill DC has really good Late-Night
-Con: Far from southside
Bowles [all male]:
-Pro: Extremely social, very loud. Lots of fun. Weekly Super Smash tournies, at least this year. CLOSEST TO CAMPUS, YOU JUST NEED TO CROSS THE STREET AND YOU'RE ON CAMPUS. Foothill DC has really good Late-Night
-Con: Lots of stairs, not enough laundry machines. Oldest facility
Stern [all female]:

Weekly Smash tournies......... I cannot resist.. but the all-male dorm is a turn-off.
