housing problem need help!

i am from hong kong and going to exchange in uva coming spring semester. got a few questions about housing and hope you guys can help me. thanks!

actually i don't really like hall style living and prefer to have single room. but i am not sure whether should i live in irc or other dorms.
anyone can give some suggestions? because i can only find little information concerning the floorplans on the web.

thanks!

Hmm I am just wondering if you have to live in UVa dorms.

I think the IRC is a great place to live especially for exchange students. You’ll meet lots of American students as well as students from other countries. You might or might not get a single I really don’t know, but the IRC doesn’t have too many singles.

If you live in other dorms you also might or might not get a single. Gooch has lots of Singles. Copley has singles too I think, but I can’t say for sure. Hereford has singles too. All the others I think are only doubles?

Good luck.

thanks a lot sciencerd!

as i am going to uva during spring 2010, so i do not have much idea about the living there.

actually the school told me that they have singles for faulkner, gooch and hereford. But I am not sure about the people there and the culture.

also, is IRC a more hall style one?

lots of thanks!!!

Out of the three that you have said I would probably choose Gooch because that is a suite style one. Hereford is singles in a hall, but people have said they don’t like it. Faulker I don’t have experience with, but it’s kinda far away from the main campus.

The culture at the three I can’t say much about, but I can guess that you’d get more interaction at the IRC and get closer to more people.

The IRC is about half suites and half hallway style. You might or might not get a single because they might have reserved some for exchange students, but I am not certain.

I understand your desire for a single. Roommates can be ungodly frustrating. Still, I’d strongly encourage you to choose a suite setup. It’s college, and were all here to learn, but especially with an exchange program it’s also about meeting people and sharing the experience. Singles by nature are isolating.

Of your list I’d scratch Faulkner. It’s some distance from main campus. The IRC would be good though.
