I'm an out of state student. I have been recently admitted into the business honors program. But I have NOT yet applied for a dorm. Am I automatically reserved a spot in any dorm (honors dorm maybe)..? How would I secure housing?

There is no guarantee, but they almost always have space for everyone who asks. Apply ASAP though!

You are elligible for honors dorms, but they usually fill fast, so you might be out of luck there. You are not reserved a spot in any particular dorm though.

You may want to look at some of the off-campus dorms such as University Towers, Dobie Center, and the Castilian.

I couldn’t find anything on the site, so this is all from what I’ve been told…
As far as I know, UT unfortunately does not have enough housing for all students and cannot guarantee a spot for all students. Therefore, you should do your housing ap ASAP to try and get a spot still. Good luck! :)

//Edit
Wow, I definitely did not see loneranger’s post. We basically said the same thing… haha

If you want to try to get a room on campus, apply for on campus housing.
[Division of Housing and Food Service - Online Services<a href=“choose” title=“Apply Now”>/url
Do this soon. You should get a housing contract soon. Return it soon.

When we took our first tour at UT, the tour guide told us he had applied for housing in April and gotten on campus housing, but he had been put in supplemental housing at first - in a study lounge with three other guys - but that later in the year he got a double nice room. (It is possible that being in honors will help you get a spot in honors housing even though you have applied late - call the housing office and ask - it is worth a try - the honors housing works a little bit differently than the other dorms do.)[url=<a href=“UHD Homepage | University Housing and Dining”>http://www.utexas.edu/student/housing/index.php?site=0&scode=0&id=107]Division of Housing and Food Service - General Contact Info](<a href=“UHD Homepage | University Housing and Dining”>UHD Homepage | University Housing and Dining)
You will hear in mid July regarding whether you got a room and where your room will be.

There is another option: the private dorms are near campus, have openings and are popular with freshmen. They are a little nicer in some ways than on-campus housing, and they are a little bit more expensive.
Starting next year, students will apply for housing after they are admitted (which is much more sensible), but many of the kids entering in fall 2008 applied for housing in October 2007 under the current system.

I think that UT does not really have enough dorm rooms on campus.

Because you are late in the game, I would recommend talking to the housing office. They may be able to give you helpful advice.

(Yes, all three of us are giving you virtually the same advice.)

Where are you from?

I’m from Maryland. I just filled out the application. Should I contact the housing office before submitting the application?

And if spots are open, do I get to choose which dorm I want?

There is really no need to contact them. I would just submit the application.
And to answer your second question, you select your top 5 dorms in order but there is no 100% guarantee you will get your first choice.

wait, the application doesn’t allow to select my top 5 dorms. It allows me to pick my first and second preferences from the choices “none”, “shared”, and “single.” What’s wrong?

After you submit your application, then you pick your top 5 dorms. The application is just to reserve your spot.

Hey guys,
I paid my housing deposit or whatever.. and according to the website, I should receive an email with my housing contract.. does anyone know why I haven’t received this yet? It’s been like 2 weeks. I paid my housing fee in November.. and my deposit or whatever late march.. (after being accepted)

Contracts are being offered in batches once you are accepted. Almost everyone was accepted in late March, so it’s going to take a while.

You will be able to rank your preferences but because you are applying so late you will likely not get them. You will be assigned to a random room in a dorm such as Jester, or else given a supplemental room (a study lounge with beds, basically).

^yea my first choice is Jester. I’m just worried that there’s a possibility that I won’t get a dorm at all..

Anybody from Chicagoland area headed to Austin?

My daughter says there are “out of state students” who are coming to Texas in the fall who are talking to each other on the University of Texas 2012 facebook page - check for Chicago there. (We live in Ohio - not too far away!)

I submitted my housing app yesterday but I still didn’t get to pick my top choices for dorms. How do I do this?

They will send you a contract. Hopefully soon. Sign it and fax it back to them quickly. Wait a few hours or a day. Then their web site will say that they have your contract. Then you will be able to rank your top five choices online. My recollection is that my daughter couldn’t see this part until they had her contract.

If honors is your first choice, make sure you click on the honors button on the left (something like “I am committed to living in an honors community”) in addition to specifying honors as your first choice. I think they might be helpful to to honors students who want to live in honors housing; it is worth a try. Good luck.

Yes, your best bet will be when you are offered a contract to click on the honors agreement and rank Honors as #1. You can rank everything else #2-#5 but expect to end up in Jester if you don’t get Honors. Actually, expect to end up in Jester anyways.

But you are guaranteed a real dorm if they issue you a contract. If you get a supplemental room, they will give you a “supplemental contract” and I believe a discount rate (not such a bad deal for procrastinating so bad).

I would like to clear up a few issues from this thread.
- Next fall students may apply for housing after they complete their admission application. They do not need to be admitted in order to apply for housing.
- There is a new supplemental space in the Honors Quad. There is still a chance that by applying this late, you could be offered a supplemental contract in the Honors Quad.

One more thing…
You cannot make your housing choices until you are offered a contract.
