Housing question

If my son wants a certain dorm really badly, would it be beneficial to find a roommate who also wants that dorm and request to room together? Would they be more likely to get a certain dorm if they both put the same dorm as their first choice?

Thanks in advance

While I don’t know how much it would improve his chances, it can’t hurt to at least try. What dorm is your son interested in?

He wants an Honors dorm double room. He’s a Capstone Scholar (not Honors) but would really like to live in the Honors dorm. We’ve heard there are always a number of rooms left over for non-Honors students.

To better his chances, he would need a preferred roommate who is in the Honors College.

Personally, if I was a Capstone Scholar, I would just live in Capstone. It’s a lot better than a lot of the other options available on campus (South Tower, Bates, the Roost all come to mind)

I also wouldn’t count there being “extra space” available in the Honors Dorm. I have a friend who won first choice housing and was told after choosing Honors that she couldn’t live there due to the fact that they didn’t think they would have room with the amount of freshman Honors students coming in. I also know of a couple of HC students who didn’t even originally get a spot in Honors.

Capstone is a great choice and the main difference between Honors and Capstone is location. Both are decent locations, just on different sides of campus.

Yeah, he had chosen Capstone when first doing the housing application, but when he and my husband went to Scholars’ Day, he toured the Capstone dorm and found it fairly “blech”. Maybe that’s just how it is on campus. He toured the HC dorm during our first visit late last year and liked it. But if it’s tough to get into, it’ll probably just be Capstone. Thanks for the info!

Capstone is one of those things that you have to get used to. Yeah, it has 17 stories (18 if you count the restaurant on top), and can be a little grimy to look at. But, it has some of the biggest bedrooms, Gibbes Court Bistro, and is in close proximity to the buildings that most introductory freshman classes will be held. And, honestly, if he’s going to be a Capstone scholar, he’s going to want to live in the dorm because that’s where all of the required Capstone events happen.

The other advantage to staying in Capstone is that I think they have some class sections for those students that meet there.

We’re convinced. Thanks everyone!
