Housing Question

I've been lurking around this site for a long time and I finally decided to create an account because I'm really curious about my housing assignment.

I'm in the Honors Program, so I'll be in South Quad. Pretty much everyone I've talked to about the housing (which is not very many people) said that freshmen were usually on the 3rd or 4th floor, but I'm on the 6th. Is that something that changed recently or will I be with mostly upperclassmen?

Also, does anything know about Bush House? Is it all female or is it co-ed? Do some events happen just within the house you are in?

My D and her roommate are both freshmen athletes from two different sports. They are in South, on one of the upper floors.

Don’t worry! It will be fine.

Hello, I’m in the Honors Program and will be staying in South Quad as well. May I ask how do you know which floor you’re in? My address says 28xx Frederick House, does that indicate I’m on the 2nd floor? or perhaps 8th?

Also, if anyone can provide more info about Frederick House, it’ll be greatly appreciated! I’m wondering if it’s in an all-female or co-ed corridor, and whether it consists of more freshmen or upperclassmen. Thanks a lot!

The first number is the floor, the last three numbers are the room number.

Thanks for your reply, Samurai! I’m not really worried about living in South Quad, I just really want to learn more about the more specific area I will be staying in.
paperstars, like the other poster said, I went by the first number.

I’m still wondering more specific details about Bush House, like paperstars is about Frederick. Also, do the houses really mean anything other than a wing you are in?

There are freshmen honors students in Bush House. I don’t know all the details. The second number is the room number is the wing of the building your are in. I think 1-4 are on the west side of the building and 5-8 are in the east side of the building. A house usually consists of a couple of floors within a portion of the building. It is not a big deal. There are some social events that are done within your house. Also the RA’s are responsible for the students within a certain house. I believe all of the houses in SQ are co-ed but some are co-ed corridors and some are not.

I lived in the 3700 hallway of Taylor House my freshman year, and the 6200 hallway of Bush House my sophomore year. It is true that most Honors freshmen are housed on the third and fourth floors (Taylor and Hunt Houses), but a few are sprinkled around in Bush and Fred houses as well. I don’t know much about Fred House since I’ve never lived there, but Bush House corridors should be co-ed. You’ll have an RA who lives in your hallway (or really close to your hallway) whose job it is to get everyone connected and friends with each other, so you shouldn’t have too many troubles getting to know people. You’ll also meet people in your Honors classes who may be living in South Quad, so that also helps with making friends.

For paperstars, you are on the 2nd floor in Fred House. It’s a little bit of an awkward location because 2nd floor is sort of like a half floor (it doesn’t continue the entire width of the building like 3-9 floors do), but the upside is that you’re never waiting for elevators - you just hop up a half flight of stairs. You should also be pretty close to the dining hall and the East entrance of the building :)

Thanks you all so much for your answers!

Thanks all for the info! Does anyone know if the 2nd floor of Frederick House consist of mostly Honors students or non-Honors students?

I believe 2nd Fred is an Honors floor, so it should consist of mostly Honors students :)

I’ve thought of a couple more things that I would really appreciate knowing about South Quad. I feel like since this is the dorm where orientation was held I should know all of these answers, but there are still a few things I’m wondering about.

First off, is there like a kitchen on every floor or something like that?
If there is not one, is there a place where I could wash my dishes? And where would I get drinking water… just drinking fountains?
I was also wondering what people’s thoughts were on bringing a microwave. I usually drink a lot of tea and will probably be having some Easy Mac or something similar.
Does the whole dorm have the same type of furniture? And, if so, it’s not the modular stuff, right? I seem to remember thinking it would be almost impossible to move.

Thanks in advance!

You could always bring a plug in electric tea kettle.

Also, housing website says its the Building Blocks furniture. It is stackable at South Quad.

Thanks, Samurai! The electric tea kettle is definitely a great idea, but I still feel like I would need a microwave for food if I wanted to eat in my room. I can’t believe I didn’t see that on the website! I swear I looked, but obviously not well enough!

If anyone else has any insight on the whole kitchen/water/microwave question, I would love to hear from you!

You can definitely bring a microwave.

There are no kitchenettes available for students to use in South Quad, which is sad. However, there are community trash/sink rooms where students would go and wash their dishes, fill up Brita pitchers, that sort of thing. I’m not sure if those designated rooms with the sinks are on every floor, since some hallways only have a closet with trash bins. Of course, if you end up being lucky and getting a sink in your room, you can always wash dishes there!

There are drinking fountains in the hallways, but some of them tend to be really old and kind of gross - I find that if you don’t have a sink in your room, a Brita filter pitcher does the trick. You can fill it with tap water and it filters it so you can leave it in your room for nice purified water. DEFINITELY bring a microwave. I don’t know what I would have done without a microwave for those late night snack attacks!

And as for the modular furniture - I’m not sure if they’ve gotten to South Quad yet with the new furniture, but it is most likely that your room will have the old building block furniture. It is quite heavy to move, haha, but you can slide the bookshelves and dressers across the floor. If you want to loft your bed, take the mattress off before you loft it!!! The mattresses are super heavy and definitely will impede your moving the frame. Also, there are a million people around during move-in (parents, move-in makers, other students, etc.) that will be happy to help you loft the bed. As I remember, it took at least 3 people of normal strength to loft.

Just looked back at your original post, and you said you’re on the 6th floor (Bush House) - your floor in your end of the building should have one of those combined trash/sink rooms :)
