<p>I was wondering the same thing myself. I think it may not matter (doing one or the either won’t increase your chances) since it’s a lottery. Although, since it’s a lottery, i don’t really know why they bother asking us…</p>
<p>Definitely don’t do that. If they don’t have a classic res hall triple when they attempt to give you your #1 choice, obviously they won’t have it for any of the others. The only thing you would accomplish is giving up the ability to pick an alternative which is definitely more favorable than other alternatives. If they can’t offer you a classic res hall triple, they’ll most likely give you the least selected option because others who did pick different alternatives will get the “better” second and third options. It would be in your best interest to put down two alternates for the building and room type so that you will at least have a better chance of getting something you somewhat like.</p>
<p>Being in the housing lottery does not necessary mean your room is picked out of a hat at random. They do take your preferences in consideration when they assign you housing. Being in the lottery means you are put in a general pool of applicants and are given something (contrast that to you picking your housing yourself, which you can do in subsequent years).</p>
