Hi everyone, I am a transfer sophomore, and I have several question about housing. Please help.

In my roommate questionnaire, there is a question asking me if I am willing to live off campus with other transfer students. Does it mean that Rice will find off campus for me? If so, what is the range of prices of off campus rooms Rice find for me? Are they as cheap(comparing to on campus) as off campus rooms I find for myself? I am considering off campus rooms because I am currently on budget.

And I also worry about social aspect of living off campus. Does living off campus make it hard for me to integrate into Rice community as a transfer? Is there anyone who has such experiences before?

Thanks, everyone!

Rice, to my knowledge, does not suggest off campus apartments for you. Or at least they didn’t last year for transfers. They simply ask that question so that residential colleges can suggest other transfer students to possibly room with. If you’re looking for roommates, check out the Transfer Student Association Facebook page. That’s usually a good place to find people.

You can integrate into the Rice community no matter where you live, just some locations are going to require more effort on your part than others. If you can get on campus, I would definitely go for that. H&D has said that transfer housing is going to be more difficult than last year, but it’s honestly a little too early to rule it out entirely. Your chances of getting on campus housing (if any opens up) will depend on how far away you live from Houston.

Thanks, wallaceicy06! Why my chances of getting on campus depend on my location to Houston? If I live in another country, is my chance close on zero?

Sorry for the late reply. The further you are from Houston, the better. In terms of housing waitlist priority, it goes Exchange Students > International Transfers > Out of state transfers > In state transfers.

I got ya. Thanks, Wallaceicy!
