Housing question?

Just making sure..housing is not first come first serve right, expecially if i wanted to get into a certain building? So just apply by the may 1 deadline?

are the showers individual stalls or is it lockerroom style?

so chances are even if you and your requested dormmate both put down doubles, you might end up in a triple with one person you don't know? does anyone know how many freshmen get assigned to double or triple?

Individual. But there's no place for clothes to stay dry without walking outisde of the stall except at Sproul.

4pointer: It could happen. They always try to match your preferences as much as possible.

yes , for freshmen it doesnt matter as long you as you apply by may 1. there is no first come first serve for us.

Hey I had a question about the rooming and meals. At this page http://map.ais.ucla.edu/portal/site/UCLA/menuitem.789d0eb6c76e7ef0d66b02ddf848344a/?vgnextoid=45c51de9e5c32010VgnVCM1000008f8443a4RCRD
What does the CUB, BLue, Premier, and GOld mean? Is it like better food or what? And are the residence halls a good place to stay at? Is it hella loud and a hard place to study or have some quiet time?

If I'm not mistaken, CUB, Blue, and Gold are all the same. You get that number of meals per week, and then it resets for the next week.

Premier is cumulative...for example, if you have 14 Premiere, you can go over 14 meals a week if you had less the previous week. Uncompleted meals can therefore carry over to future weeks.

Well actually... they give you all of your meals for the quarter at the beginning with premier.

so if there's no place for clothes to stay dry, what do people do, undress in their dorm rooms and go to the bathroom in a robe?

"Well actually... they give you all of your meals for the quarter at the beginning with premier."

Yeah, that's a better way to phrase it.

I mean stay completely dry. Yeah, it's a bit damp on the ground. Only Sproul has the bench (like a fitting room) in the stall.

Same question.

by the way, when we turn in housing apps, do we need to tell them what halls or suites we want or is that afterwards? im just wondering because i need to do some research on the dorms if we have to decide which we want by may 1st. also, if we want to room with friends, is that on the application and how does it work? or how do we choose roommates?

There's a mandated quiet time at night.

Generally residence halls are much 'livelier." It also depends a lot on how the other people that lives around you. If anything you can always try going to a lounge.

De Neve: Residential Plazas, Private Bath

collegegirlgirl: You can't tell them which particular building you want. Only the type.

Roommate requests are on the application. It has to be mutually requested. I believe that the application itself pretty much explains all the details.

Unfortunately, you can only specify ONE preference, if I remember correctly. You indicate that either housing type, theme housing or roommate request is most important to you.

which specification would you recommend is best? do most people room with their friends or with complete strangers, because i want to live in a dorm that is pretty social, but where i can also study as well. is it a good idea to room with friends or with new people?

Collegegirlgirl,

For the specification, I would say that it depends on your own preferences. When I was applying as a first-year, I wanted a double in a res hall so I indicated that housing type was most important to me. If you don't care about housing type and would rather stay on the academic enhancement floor then you should specify that theme housing is more important and so on. Also, I would only recommend rooming with a friend if you would feel comfortable enough telling them that somethings about their lifestyle bugs you. I've heard stories about people rooming with friends from HS and then realize that their friend has some VERY annoying habits, but are unable to express their feelings because don't want to hurt their friend's feelings. My first year I roomed with someone random and we got along really well and still hang out as often as we can now that we are no longer roommates. I've only heard about a select few cases where random roommates actually didn't get along very well.

what do you mean by the "academic enhancement floor?" so housing type is like whether u want res hall or suite or something or if u want a single/double/triple? what is the "theme" type then?

There's different themes such as "academic enhancement" in which many of the floor's activities are geared towards (one such activity is going to the Getty Meseum with the floor.) There's also some sort of judicial floor, and a fitness-type floor. But I think majority of the floors do not have themes (though I could be wrong at this.) I suspect that housing type includes both the hall and the number of roommates. So if you mark that you'd like a plaza double and say that "housing type" is the most important thing on your application, then they'll try to make sure to give you that. Of course, what you ultimately end up with depends on the availability of each particular room.
