Which dorm would you recommend for a first-year Industrial Engineer?

I'm interested in:
* North Campus Dorm - I hear its more conveniant for engineers
* Close Group of Friends - From the dorms that want to go out and explore Chicago on weekends
* Industrial Eng./Econ - Decent number of dorm mates in these majors.. but also enough non-engineers
* Dorm Mates - Work hard, but are relaxed and work together. I can't people who are stressed out all the time and more competitive than they need to be.
* Not a Pre-Frat dorm - Frat is just something I don't see myself doing. In HS, I've been the nice guy that is on good terms with most people, but not a popular jock type. That means I probably don't want my dorm to be party central on weekends, though a couple here and there are alright. I might party a little but I see myself participating more in activities on-campus and exploring what Chicago has to offer (sporting venues, concerts, nightlife)... with a group of friends.

Haha, gatorade, I'm looking for the EXACT same type of dorm as you are...like you, I'm into having a fun time but I'm really not the party type of person (a couple are alright)...I'm generally a very relaxed and easy-going person but I work hard as well and I'm the nice, friends with everyone, but not as popular as the jocks kind of guy...so I really want to know what ppl would suggest. I'm ok with both North and South Campus although most of my classes are going to be in North. I heard that the walk is very manageable. I'm leaning towards Slivka right now but I'm still thinking. I heard Slivka has very nice facilities and most ppl there are engineering and science majors...but I also heard it's quite antisocial...if by antisocial, not a lot of parties, then I'm ok with that..but if it means ppl don't collaborate and are very into their own lives, then I don't think I want to live in a dorm like that...

lol im looking for the EXACT same thing as well. for me, i'm considering slivka first, then cci because im gonna need all the study time i can get for premed and the added bonus of a music room (double major). i slept at sheperd for preview night, and i don't think that place is right for me. kinda dirty and old. any "clean" facilities? i need 3 more choices!

haha I think we just created a small community of the type of ppl we'd like to be around with right here lol. Btw, when are housing applications out? Are they already or did they say May 25th or something?

They are not out already... and no, Slivka does not just mean "no parties," it means "no fun." That's a harsh overgeneralization, but it seems very true from what I have seen. I have never met anyone from Slivka, and they're the ones who call the police to report parties on saturday nights when they're trying to study.

i'm looking at this piece of paper that they sent with the admission letter and it says:

"Housing Deposit: You will receive a mailing in mid-May requesting a $200 housing deposit. At the time you will have two options for payment. You can mail the deposit or pay online. Housing deposits may not be made now. The housing deposit is due May 25."

my problem is that i'm leaving the country May 17 to where i probably won't have internet access, and i won't be back until mid-june.

Put CCI as your first choice if you're dead set on your current thinking, don't put slivka as a choice. Put elder in your top 5, simply because it is north and you will be with alot of freshman, not all of them will be party 24/7 and the dorm will give you opportunities to. To be honest with you, most people at northwestern hardly ever drank in high school, yet when they came here they all started drinking twice a week because it's great. Don't rule out frats and parties simply because I'm willing to bet you haven't experienced enough of it to know its not for you. Also if you want to live with a close group of friends, try some of the south campus residential colleges, allison, willard, etc. You'll learn to deal with the walk, your social life is more important than convenience. Don't put slivka in top 5. You could maybe put sargent, and I'd put bobb as well, since its better to live in a party dorm if you party even a little bit since it leaves you options. Living in an anti-social dorm means you won't know whats going on when you do want to go out. Your first year in college, if you plan on having any more than two friends in college you're going to want to live in a social dorm. Elder, Bobb, Allison. One of my good friends lived in CCI and while it attracts its crowd, he hated it, people don't go out enough.

ndhawk is 100% right, PLEASE listen to him. I was one of those people who drank like a total of 3 times in high school and had no idea what to expect when I came to college EXCEPT that I wouldn't join a frat. Now I'm in a frat and it's the best part of my social life at NU. You don't want to be THAT sheltered, at least your freshman year.
