I was wondering if someone could weigh in on a question I just thought of…so we all know MT admissions are all stretched out and last minute most of the time, so…what about all these emails my D is getting about “housing opens Feb 1” etc…obviously we are not going to be committing to anywhere before April probably… so…is my D going to get screwed with housing since she is applying for it later? I am confused! I feel like I have heard stories about not getting a decent dorm room because you are applying for it late?
There is a housing thread from this past fall (http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/musical-theater-major/1940396-enrollment-and-housing-deposits.html) - 1st one I saw when I searched. This seems to be discussed every year, so I’m sure there are others - try “housing” or “dorms.” Every school is different - sorry there’s no set answer! D’s school (Wright State) houses all freshmen MT & Acting Majors in the Honors Dorm - unless they choose to not live on campus- but the large majority do, so we didn’t have to worry about decent dorm rooms.
It truly varies depending upon the school. Some schools paying the deposit in advance does matter and that is why people put down a housing deposit even if they aren’t sure. Other schools it doesn’t matter at all. Just know that there should be housing available for your child, though it may not be exactly what they wanted due to having to wait till the last minute. One of the lovely “perks” of going through this whole process.
I wouldn’t worry about it. I’m sure if you’re child gets accepted they will have a place to rest their head. With that in mind as soon as you make a decision put your money down. But it might depend on the school they’ve been accepted to…if you have concerns call their housing department.
