Housing Question

For all of you Brown enthusiasts... how hard is it to get in as a transfer??

where else do people recommend applying to live for transfers?

Everyone had recommended Bice or Lambeth. I'm going to try for either, but probably Bice first since it's so close to Lawn/E-school

it is hard to get in as a transfer over the summer, if that's what you mean, but we don't distinguish between transfers and no transfers in fall applications for the next year. so you might have to live somewhere else for this year, and then apply to live here next year.

as far as bice and lambeth, those are highly coveted for those already here. nothing against transfers, but i dont know how much space in either is left/who has priority (those who have been on a waitlist for months now, or those who just got in). i do know they love to put transfers in gooch/dillard and then you'll get to know eachother better since youre all there, but that's just what ive heard and could be all lies.

and how bad is gooch/dillard aside from the distance?

The rooms in Gooch/Dillard are literally the size of closets. Depending on how you place your bed and other furniture, you may have no walk-around space. It doesn't help that the walls are paper thin as well.

Gooch is actually closer for classes than Lambeth, maybe even Bice, but it's farther away from the social scene. You have your own room, as part of a 6-room two level suite, sort of like a mini-townhouse. The rooms, though, are extremely small as is the "living area". A huge problem is that there is no kitchen so you're forced to drive for dinner unless you actually like overpriced dining hall food with pseudo-meat.

Lambeth and Bice are rather dumpy and can be a problem walking to alone at night, but at least you have a kitchen.

so then what is the best place for transfers to live in your opinion? is the upside of easily being able to get a single in gooch/dillard worth dealing with the small size and distance? is there anywhere else that is better where transfers have a chance of living? (sounds like bice and lambeth are in too high demand)

Sadly, most transfers are put in Gooch/Dillard, but the only upside, other than the single, is the airconditioning.

Are there transfers in Lambeth or Bice? Or are they totally non-existent?

Transfers are placed all over grounds. Most are just in Gooch/Dillard.

For any guys looking to live in Lambeth: go on to www.hoohasit.com There's a bunch of posts on there from guys looking for someone to replace them in a Lambeth contract. If you contact the person, and both of you then contact the housing department, they'll simply move it from that persons name to yours, and you'll be in Lambeth.

If only I could find a girl wanting to give up her spot :(

if you are also looking to get an ongrounds contract from someone trying to give theirs up, try www.onthegrounds.com and www.offgrounds.com

that's how i got rid of mine last year when I decided to get an apartment instead.

Is housing first come first serve? Because I sent in my deposit two days ago and still cant apply for my 1st choice dorm, and Im worried all the dorms will get filled up and Ill be stuck in Hereford with the weeeeeird ass kids.

for 1st yrs? no, its random lottery assignment.

MDT: what do you mean you can't apply for your first choice dorm? Is that Lambeth? What does it say when you try to apply for it?

I can't even register yet. UVa hasn't put me into their system. i'd like to register for old dorms however.

it takes a little bit of time. be patient. you wont get locked out of old dorms.

If any males are looking for a Bice contract, I have two available in the same room. You can either sign up for one, or sign up with a friend and live in the same room.

As i'm sure all of you know, Bice and Lambeth are pretty much the only places on grounds that are good to live in. Gooch/Dillard requires a bus to get to anything besides the E-school and if you want to get to the corner during the night time, expect at least a 25 minute walk. Copeley/Faulkner is even worse as it's located in North Grounds near JPJ.

I've already registered, and it turns out they're still going to give you a choice between McCormick and Alderman. Yey! I chose Old Dorms, then New Dorms was my second choice.
