So today I moved into Baits II (better than I expected), but my parents have done some researching and they have found an apartment that's really close to campus and it's really new, which makes it so good. After I finished unloading, they showed me the apartments (they had open house), and I loved it as well, and the great part is that a double room apartment there costs $2k more than the double I live in now (which really isn't good other than the social stuff ... and it actually isn't that loud here).

I talked to my RA about it, and he agreed with me (and my parents) on the quality of living there, but he also brought up an important point that living in the dorm is an important part of the college experience and this is how I can be socially connected to campus ... and that I can move into that apartment later.

I have already filled out the form to terminate the housing contract, but how likely is it that Housing will approve of my request ... and if you think I should stay in Baits, why?

Well, judging by this page: [UM Housing - Your Contract with University Housing](http://www.housing.umich.edu/info/contract.html), where it says “The student will not be released from the contract to move to off-campus housing (fraternity, sorority, apartment),” I’d say your chances are not good. I am curious though, what reason did you give them for wanting to terminate the contract?

You bring the whole issue of transportation. Unless it’s so close that walking in the winter wouldn’t be a problem you now have an extra bus you need to take.

Out of curiousity, this double room apartment is only 2K more for one of those 2 rooms or for the whole thing (which really makes the apartment cheaper)?

I would stay in Baits for at least your first semester before trying to duck out, give dorm living a try. There’s really nothing like it, and while it may not be glamorous your college years (hopefully) are a once in a lifetime experience. You may even find you enjoy it if you keep an open mind, I really do. You can live in an apartment the whole rest of your life but this is your one chance to have this experience, and a lot of good comes with the bad.

you should stay in~~~
like others had said, living in a dorm during 1st yr is definitely going to be a big part of the college experience, and its a great way to meet lots of people in your hall ~

The apartment is actually right across from Baits/Bursley. (I think it’s called courtyards or something like that). That’s why I’m so willing to move there … I won’t be that far removed from the college experience … it’s just a short walk away from campus life.

I haven’t given a reason yet (“other”), but I was going to be honest with them (moving to an apartment) but I can come up with another reason with “Medical” … since the dorm isn’t the cleanest place on earth but that wouldn’t fly as well.

I’ll be talking with the Hall Director in 1/2 hour and hopefully I can settle on something.
