Housing question

Hey so I just got accepted =) good luck to the rest.I wouldn’t worry, I got rejected early decision, but this time around I got lucky I guess.

ANYWAY,

When should I apply for housing? How long till all the spots get filled? Do I have some time, or should I act quickly?

also how do I confirm my intent to enroll?

I read somewhere housing application starts Feb 23rd. =)

alright thanks!!

Though I still do not know why they open up housing apps so early. Even before most of the UC’s send out their notifications.lol.

Yes! That is so frustrating! I think they do it to give preference to the students who really want Cal Poly over the UCs. That is actually pretty nice for them.

Exactly right.

I heard that you have to enroll at Cal Poly before you can apply for housing. How much is the enrollment deposit? I assume none of its refundable should someone decide to attend another school? Too bad my daughter hasn’t heard back from the other schools yet. Oh, well. It’s still worth it to save a place at Cal Poly.

I mentioned to my daughter that she needs to get busy and look at housing and that means sending in an enrollment deposit first. I had read here that she couldn’t apply for housing until Feb. 23 or something. She now thinks there’s no hurry to apply. But, can she actually do it SOONER if she enrolls? How soon should she begin the process? I would hate for her to lose out on a decent residence hall because she waited. She told me not to worry because everyone hasn’t even received their acceptance notice yet. But, all the ED kids have already chosen, right?

Regular decision housing opens at 9:00AM on February 23.

ED housing registration started at the end of January. The housing deposit is $800 plus some fees for credit card processing that brings to total deposit to about $823.

Marinier116 - did it say what the refund policy is on that $800+ deposit?

It’s kind of a Catch-22. A student definitely wants to get in their housing application as soon as the date is available, but hopefully that doesn’t mean losing $800 if, for some reason they don’t attend. I realize that most kids who apply to Cal Poly have every intention of attending, so it’s no big deal.

If I read the terms correctly… he deposit is fully refundable until August 13th. After that there appears to be some fee involved in a cancelation.

Thank you, Mariner116. Where can I find this link? I just want to show it to my daughter.

2Leashes, scroll down to August 13th and you will see it listed as the last day to cancel housing without financial penalty:

listen up everyone- I am a freshman at SLO this year.

FOR HOUSING-
It says that it opens at 9:00 am or whatever, which means you should be sitting at your computer at 8:50 trying to get in early if you really want a certain dorm. Also, I was just messing around on the site last year on the night before housing opened and apparantly they were doing a test run to make sure the system was up, so I was able to apply for housing the night before everyone else got in, so you could also try the night before to check if you can sneak in early.

Since that day is a school day, would it be filled by the time I come back from school? (3:30-4ish)

^surfboard3r Where do you live? Could you share with us what you think of the dorm you live in and any of the other dorms you know about? Those of us onCC would appreciate it! Also, what is your major and how do you like slo in general?
Thanks!

i live in sierra madre, its pretty fun, you really get to know the people in your specific tower really well, while you dont really get to know people outside of it. yosemite is further from campus but it is also the most social between the sexes seeing as that each floor has both guys and girls on it. the red bricks are smaller rooms than yosemite and sierra madre and you run the risk of a triple (unless you want one). north mountain is alright, you share a bathroom with three other rooms, this dorm isnt very social because your door opens up to a sidewalk whereas the others dont. cerro vista is really nice and new and you get your own room, but you dont meet many people outside of your apartment. so it really depends on how social your son/daughter is. I’m electrical engineering major, slo is alright, there are some really fun aspects and there are some not so fun aspects. overall, the outdoors is one of the main extracurricular activities people look for, so if your son/daughter is really outdoorsy this would be a perfect place. And even if they arent there is still a lot of stuff to do.

Thanks for that info surfboard3r
Do you remember how soon after the housing application date opened up did you sign up for housing? I would really like to get into Sierra madre, but it looks like I’ll have to wait until the first week of March to apply. Is it too risky to wait that long?

you should apply the day the housing app opens
