Housing Questions

hey guys,

I'm an international FSU applicant. I should be getting my admission decision in March and I was told that housing works on a first-come first-serve basis so I want to sign up for it ASAP if admitted - will I get screwed because I didn't apply earlier?
I know that there are a lot of housing options at FSU but I would love your input. about me:
1) I'm very outgoing - i love to party
2) I'm extremely social and love to meet new people
3) I don't want to live in a ****ty dorm, but a dorm with better social life that's decent would be preferable
to a beautiful modern renovated dorm that has boring social life (in that regard, i read that community would be better for me)
4) I will probably move out to a frat sophomore year
5) I don't mind being bound to a meal plan
6) I'm basically looking for a decent+ dorm with cool people that like to party, pre-drink, socialize and so forth

would love your input guys!

Given what you’re looking for, I think you’ll be happy with any of FSU’s community style halls. All of them are not nearly as nice as the modern halls, but I wouldn’t describe any as ****ty either. If social is what you want, Kellum and Smith are probably your two best choices. Do you find out the same time everyone else does in March? Make sure you apply the very second you get admitted. Good luck.

will do. since I’ll be hearing back from other schools later, is the housing application fee (the 200 and something $) refundable if i don’t enroll in FSU?

those two dorms are on everyone’s “stay away from” list, so I’m kinda hesitant… I really don’t want to live in a derelict old falling apart nothing working dorm. are any of the newer ones social / party oriented / conducive at all? if not, how bad are they with regards to social life?

thanks again I appreciate your help!

I just read on FSU’s website that there’s a visitor curfew in both the droms you mentioned… that doesn’t sound like too much fun since you can’t have people over after midnight…

You cannot have guests of the opposite gender over in any of the community style halls between 12 and 11 AM on a weeknight, and 2:30 AM and 11 AM on a weekend night. The policy sucks, but that’s just the way it is for all the community halls.

To be honest, you’re likely not going to get into one of the renovated or new halls if you’re applying in March, but if the visitation policy is a big deal to you (completely understandable), I’d make Salley your #1 choice. It’s the only suite style hall on the west side, the only one that has not been renovated, and therefore is the least demanded of the suite style halls. Whether it’s social or not is hit or miss depending on the floor. I’m not even sure you’d be able to get Salley with what your priority number will be, but it’s something to consider.

Dorman and Deviney are probably slightly nicer than Kellum and Smith (Deviney now has carpet), but Kellum and Smith are the two most social halls on campus by far.

thanks for the quick reply. I guess my biggest concern is having people of the opposite sex over. I guess most people solve that by hooking up with people from their own building  is there anyway I could expedite housing application? is being international / 21 a hook in that regard?

giaviv,
A horndog like you should just get a cot in the health clinic; I’m not sure FSU housing is going to want you loose in the dorms!

Rogers Hall would work for you giaviv; it’s for mature, nontraditional students. Dorms like Dorman and Deviney are full mostly with 18 yo freshmen.

What happens if you get accepted in March, but your friend did in December so they already have their priority number, but want you as their roomate. Would you be able to get a dorm w/ their priority number, or would they have to take your sucky one ?

You would both sink to the poorer priority #.

Oh yes Tallalassie you made a good point. What would be the best dorm for someone of 21 years old? I don’t want to end up in a dorm full of 18 year olds (no offense). I want mature people!

i’m not a horndog, I have a girlfriend and I’d like to be able to have her over after midnight…
I don’t mind being with 18 year olds, in fact, I’d prefer that over a more mature population. what is the social life like at Rogers Hall?

I don’t really know because I’ve never visited (going soon) but I put Deviney as my first choice becasue , it seemed to be the nicest of the community style dorms (with the new carpet), had the best location of them (right near Landis Green), and I hear it’s pretty social. Just my two cents.

I’ve never been inside Rogers, but that little bit I’ve heard about it has not been good.

Rogers is apartment style, rent is paid on a monthly basis, and there are no RAs. My guess is it doesn’t have much of a community or social feel to it.

It’s tough to make a recommendation for you because you want the social hall without the restrictions (perfectly understandable). If I’m you, my top four are Salley (most social of the suite style, and has no restrictions), Deviney, Dorman, Kellum.

Still keep in mind that Dorman/Deviney are going to be considerably more social than Salley, and Smith/Kellum are known as the most social halls on campus.
