Okay so i was admitted OOS to the University and paid the $50 housing fee a few weeks ago, however my parents want me to wait till i hear back from all the schools i applied to before committing to UT(which is most likely what i am doing) Are my housing chances being hurt the longer I wait or is it based on when i paid the $50 deposit. (Mainly because you can't pick preferences until you accept your admission)

My daughter is in the same boat. I talked to housing yesterday to try to get a sense of how it works. From what I understand, your priority status is based on when you accept admittance into the university (assuming you have already applied for housing). Once you do that, Housing will send you a contract. So it is true that your chances decline the longer you wait. But I was also told that most kids will start accepting the admission in March, so you may have some leeway. My recommendation is for you to call Housing directly so that you are not relying on information from a stranger (me).

Priority is based on when you sent in the housing payment. Date of acceptance of admission does not matter.

@maxemoe That’s where my
Confusion lies. I paid the deposit however I can’t select my preferences until after I accept my admission.

UT Housing is all based on the date you apply for housing and pay the $50 application fee. For instance: those who applied for housing in January and did their contract in Feb will be BEHIND someone who applied in October and did their contract in April. http://bealonghorn.utexas.edu/freshmen/housing

They don’t actually assign housing until after everyone declines or accepts. However, the earlier you put in the housing deposit (the one you already paid), the closer you are to the “front of the line” to get assigned to your preference in housing, and thus more likely to get your choice (the choices you put down AFTER accepting admission).

According to the link @alisonkn posted: “Contract offers and assignments are completed based on the original application date to housing”.

There are two different fees that I think are confusing you all. The application fee of $50 goes towards the housing application. That application and fee determines your original application date, and that is the date UT Housing uses when assigning rooms.

The contract and $300 advance payment happens after you have officially accepted your enrollment to the university. Once you turn in your contract and advance payment, that guarantees you your space on campus - - but again, the room you are assigned is based on the date you applied.
