Housing questions

Hi! I haven’t taken a housing tour or anything, but I’ve been looking at halls on the ASU website…

Sonora and Hassayampa look the nicest to me, but seem pretty expensive.
The honors dorms all look nice (I would be at BHC), but community style bathrooms kind of freak me out.

I’m not looking for a healthy living type of hall… But I also don’t want to be anywhere too rowdy (I’ve heard Palo Verde is pretty rowdy…)

For someone who wants a good balance between academics/a social life, which all would you recommend?

If you will be in honors I would highly recommend that you live in the honors complex. Community bathrooms are really not an issue and in all other respects I would say that honors is far better. It's very cheap, you'll be living with many people who are likely to be the type that you enjoy spending time with, and the location cannot be beat when it comes to the time it takes to walk to class.

Sonora is kind of far from campus. It's a good 8-10 minute walk at least to any food source, and then if you have a science class on north campus, it's going to be a 15-20 minute walk. Hassayampa is very nice, but has some interesting people living in it. It all depends who you live by. I've been in most of the wings at all times of day, and the halls/elevators get really messy just from the sheer amount of people that use them. It's nice though.
Anywhere on north campus (palo verde, manzanita, san pablo) will be intensely rowdy, no escaping it. So you have to be really into that to actually be able to live sanely.

I think the honors complex is great. I renewed my contract to live there again as a sophomore I loved it so much. It's a good mix of fun and quiet, never messy or too rowdy.
I would take community bathrooms over a suite any day. They are cleaned every weekday, and the ratio of toilets/showers/sinks to people is about the same within the honors complex as it is for a suite. I have never once waited for a shower/toilet/sink...ever this entire year so far. I really enjoy the fact that I don't have to worry about questionable messes/guests in the bathrooms cause they will be cleaned the next day. It's great.
Plus, it's in a great location. The maximum walking time to anywhere on campus is about 10 minutes, it's so close to Mill Ave, the MU, Gammage, and a 24-hour ihop.

How is San Pablo?

One of my friends lives in san pablo. He loves it. It's not as crazy as most other North Campus dorms. They are huge rooms, and the layout clears a lot of space. I would recommend it if you are aiming for north campus.

Umm... what do you guys mean by rowdy? Is it like dirty, dingy nasty dorms where people just trash, puke and pass out????

Rowdy = Thursday, Friday, Saturday nights there will be people running around drunk until 4am, not being quiet. I know about five or six people who moved from north campus to the BHC just so they could sleep at night without ipods or ear plugs. Some people like being rowdy, having daily late-night fun, so if that is what you like to do, do it.

However, ASU is a huge school, and people throw up/pass out/trash everywhere. It's not a terrible thing, it's just a college experience that is dealt with by everyone everywhere.

I've been in one wing in Hassayampa where there's trash and food all over the hallway floors, but in other wings, they are completely clean.

Someone threw up in my hall, and in the girls bathroom all over the floor, in my honors dorm. It happens...one of them wasn't even because of drinking, it's just from living with other people who get sick.

No dorms are really nasty, they can get a little messy and a bit run-down, but nothing that would be unmanageable or unlivable.

Live in the honors complex! It's totally worth it, for all the reasons posted above. Plus, there's just this really nice atmosphere around...I can't quite explain it. Oh, and the gym is right next door, which is cool.

Oh, thats not even as bad as it sounds then.
I used to go to a dorm where everybody on the whole floor just trash around and having fun, and I actually had a lot of fun there.
But being in a run down building? now that kinda sucks.

Oh, it's not that bad, trust me. The dorm rooms themselves are perfectly nice. If you're looking to live in a hotel, then maybe this won't work for you, but if you're looking for a good college experience, then I would consider the honors complex. Once you get inside the complex, there's this really cool close-knit community of people...you can't beat that experience. On any given day, you walk downstairs and see people sitting around by the cafe, doing their homework and chatting. The weather's great, so everyone's outside all the time, and you end up having really fun conversations with people. Everyone is intelligent and committed, but if you're a social person, you can definitely have a fun social experience as well.

Which dorms have singles???

Residential Life
^^^ you can find all the dorms and which ones have singles/doubles/etc on there

Nah I sure as hell am not lookin forward to live in a "hotel" room. There's only one dorm (all female) that's really close to being a hotel in Pullman, and maybe its just me but I found the atmosphere in there just weird, totally un-collegelike feeling.
Of course after reading this: Dorm Warning, page 1 - News - Phoenix New Times - Phoenix New Times I began to wonder why anyone would wanna live there?
