hey guys. does anyone know when we submit our housing request forms?? im going to GAAP weekend in the end of april to make sure gtown is for me, but im worried that if i decide to go to gtown that ill miss good housing if its submitted earlier. i look at the website for last year and it said that housing stuff started in may, but i dont know if its the same this year. any help would be appreciated

Don’t worry! Housing is completely and entirely random. There are four freshman dorms and you will be assigned to one of them, the day you send in your form really has no affect on your housing (well maybe they have some kind of crazy system, but it’s nothing we know about). Plus there is heated debate about which freshman dorm is the best. There is definitely not a recognized consensus, usually people are pretty passionate about where ever they lived.

As I recall, your housing request goes in after your deposit. As mister said, it is totally random, lottery system, as to which dorm you get. Each one has something different than the others.

I really want to know about the “personalities” of each dorm. Some pros/cons would be cool too. Check out this thread on the Columbia board:

Huge respect points to anyone who writes something like that on the Georgetown housing situation.

As far as “personalities” go, I don’t think there’s any one dorm that’s like “the party dorm” or “the lame-o dorm” or anything like that. Depends on who’s in each building.

Here’s a small rundown…

Village C West:
I live here, it’s nice. Rooms are small but are the only freshman dorms with a bathroom in each room. Mostly doubles, about 3 triples on the upper floor but that’s it and those rooms are big. My beds are bunked but others don’t and it works both ways. Go outside across the patio to the laundry room, not bad. Pretty centrally located, right near dining hall.

New South:
Also very near the dining hall. Communal bathrooms but each room has a sink and a mirror. I don’t know how the room size is.

Harbin:
Right near Village C, pretty central. Communal bathrooms. Other than that, I don’t know much about Harbin.

Darnall:
From people who live there, I have heard that this dorm sucks, plain and simple. The rooms are much bigger than in Village C at least, but this dorm is very far away from most things on campus, communal bathrooms, etc. Not many redeeming qualities unless you are an NHS student because it’s very near St. Mary’s building where most nursing classes are.

ya i’ve heard from multiple people that Darnell is the worst one just because its far away from all the other freshman

I saw all of the dorms last week at GAAP Weekend. As far as quality, I would be happy living anywhere but Darnall. Personally, living in Darnall looks like it would be horrible. The good thing is that the other three dorms are above average.

Thank you tlesc01, that was really informative.

When you fill out the housing stuff, is there really no input as far as dorm preferences go? (I’m just trying to figure out if there’s any way to avoid Darnall.)

As far as I understand, there is no way to avoid Darnall or any other dorm; it’s just luck of the draw.

What’s with all the Darnall-bashing?? Allow me to redeem it… I live in Darnall, and I love it! It’s not as far away from everything as people say it is. The only thing it’s far from (meaning a 5-7 minute walk) is Leo’s, the dining hall. It’s actually a lot closer to the academic buildings, the student center, and Yates gym than the other dorms. Everyone gets really close to each other in Darnall, and you will know/bond with everyone on your floor. There’s a real sense of community on each floor in Darnall that you won’t get in the other dorms (New South is too big to know everyone on your floor, and Village C private baths often prevent you from getting to know your floormates like you would with a common bath). Harbin is nice, but the clusters are single-sex, so there’s less general interaction with the opposite sex on the floor. Plus, there’s a restaurant/Hibachi grille that takes Flex dollars (like a debit amount on your meal plan) on the bottom floor of Darnall, which is a convenient alternative to Leo’s.

Ultimately, it’s totally random where you end up, but I promise living in Darnall is a blast!! If I could do freshman year all over again and pick my dorm, I would pick Darnall in a heartbeat.

Thanks, marissa! That is reassuring given that many (including me) have the idea that Darnall is a bad place to be. Given that you had a great experience, Darnall might not be so bad after all.

Wow, marissa, thank you for the insider perspective. I will definitely worry less about Darnall and the the whole housing situation now.

does it bother anyone that you can’t have microwaves in the dorms? do any students find this inconvenient? also, are the dorms (and campus) wireless internet?
