Housing Rankings

"Dang that cleared up a lot of questions. One thing I was wondering is if most upperclassmen housing is fillled and if we can expect to have to find something off campus later"

takingiteasy,

There will always be a place for you to live in at NU. Dorms with a lot of upperclassmen include Kemper (this is like an apartment building with kitchenettes and suites), Slivka (somewhat like an apartment w/ the suites and fabulous kitchens shared by the floor), and Foster Walker (lots of singles). Kemper and Slivka are hard to get into, but most seniors have no trouble.

You can live in off campus housing if you want. The advantages of off campus housing is it comes out to being cheaper usually (you don't have to be on the meal plan which is expensive, the rent also comes out less than the cost of living in dorms) and that you have your own space (no authority, no kids running around your hall).

Also, lots of people end up living in frats/sororities.

Thanks so much for the info, everyone. I can't wait to visit this Saturday and I really think I'm going to end up here! And glamour, thanks for the heads up about CRC. If I can when I visit, I'll see if I love it or not, so I won't care if I end up there. If I don't, I'll probably try to keep my list to common dorms only. Willard sounds fantastic though! It sounds like I'll get points for things I'd probably do anyway :)

Allison, Willard, and Slivka all sound like great places to live. If I am majoring in economics, which dorm in terms of location would be most suitable for me? Also, I prefer a clean double with suite-style living so that it rules out the community bathroom. Which one of these are suites-style places and an "in-between" (not too loud but not too quiet)?
Thanks!

don't put down dorms on your list that tend not to fill up (single sex dorms, foster-walker, the fairchilds) because if you do, you will most likely be put there.

What's up with East Fairchild - Communications Residential College? I'd think it would be poplular, being so close to campus. Why doesn't it fill up?

What is the student opinion on housing website??? I have been there briefly before but now i can't find it!!!
Thanks!

Neither Allison nor Willard is suite style, but are more in-between as far as volume level, probably closer to the loud end of the spectrum. Slivka is suite style, but I have heard that it is very quiet and not very social. To be honest with you, I thought i would hate the community bathrooms too, but they really are not that bad.

It has a great location, but I think the rooms are quite small, and I don't think it tends to be the most social of dorms.

Are there any places with doubles with private baths that are in between on the noice level then? Does private baths only come with suites? What is your impression of Ayers? I guess I probably won't hate community baths THAT much once i get there but I still want to try to get a private bath.
Thanks for your help=)

ilovesugar,

Unfortunately, you are going to have to compromise on your preferences. The only suite-style housing that have no community bathrooms are at Kemper Hall and Slivka Residential College. Kemper is not available to you, and Slivka is not the most ideal location for your classes.

However, Slivka is kind of an in between (more geared towards the quiet). It's not as antisocial as people say (they do have parties and such). As well, it's the best dorm on campus in terms of how it looks on the inside and it's facilities. It's extremely clean, has an amazing recreation room, and very beautiful and new rooms. The bathrooms are fantastic. As well, it's not an easy dorm to get into.

Foster-Walker is close to Kellogg, where most econ classes are held. Foster-Walker implies that there are suites, but they're not exactly. It's really a dorm full of singles. The bathrooms are sort of wishy washy. I believe there are community bathrooms there. It's not the most social dorm for freshman. It's good for studying in.

South Campus dorms are going to be "closer" to your classes (no matter where you live on campus..it's still a good walk to Kellogg). Since you have an issue with community bathrooms, and basically all dorms have those, I think you should lean towards Willard (they remodeled their community bathrooms a few years back and they're really clean and all). Plus, the dorm is really great and have good room sizes. Willard is sort of a longer walk to Kellogg than some other south campus dorms, though.

However, since you are majoring in economics (Weinberg), you are going to have to take math classes (most of which are in tech..though some are in Lunt, a building near Kellogg). Plus, you'll have distribution requirements that you have to fill, and those classes can be in a number of places (some are in tech in north campus, some are in kellogg, others are way down south). Honestly, you are going to have to walk across the campus no matter what. In other words, I wouldn't be concerned if you end up in either a North Campus dorm or South Campus dorm. Furthermore, after sometime walking between the sides of the campus isn't really a big deal (even during winter..and mind you I come from Cali and don't find it a big deal).

I also recommend my dorm, Ayers College of Commerce and Industry, to you. It's very clean, has good sized doubles, and the community bathrooms aren't shared amongst that many people (so they're usually well kept and you don't have issues gettng a shower and such). Plus we're an economics/business/industrial engineering kind of dorm so you can relate to a lot of people. It is a north campus dorm, but like I said you'll still have to walk to tech for some classes (which it is close to). And you'll find many people happily going to Kellogg everyday. It's also one of the best "in-between" dorms you'd find.

(This is a comment site. Unfortunately, these comments are from 2002-2003. They're really outdated and have a lot of made up stuff. The mice issue isn't a huge deal in dorms. Plus, there is no racism or hate crimes going at CCI. Take this with a grain of salt.)

(This gives you some basic information)

Thanks for your input, nustudent. On the housing application, do we list our preferred dorms? If so, how many can we put down?

On your housing application,

You do list your preferred dorms. You can list up to five.

does anyone know if the dorms are chosen on a first come first served basis?

no...everyone sends in their requests early summer and the housing department places everyone at once...no preference to early admits or those sending in the housing form early..wish they did since we sent in housing deposit months ago...

Does anyone know anything about PARC? I haven't seen anyone mention it at all.

thanks!

Blondelocke,

PARC (Public Affairs Residential College) is rite in front of Allison and next to Shephard. Thereby, it's a south campus dorm. I know that the room sizes are pretty small, overall, but it's a good community and a clean dorm. Each floor is split up into suite/wings. Like one side will be a "suite" (but not really a suite) that has all guys and the other side all girls. It's really more of a hallway arrangement.

thank you so much nustudent!! you've been so much help.

I was looking at Slivka's information online and realized that it is a engineering residential college. Would that be a problem for me since my major does not have anything to do with engineering?
Based on what what you said, i've decided to put Willard down as my first choice. but just wondering if you had any comments on Allison as well..
The last thing i want to clarify is that I am not sure if I am going to major in economics or society yet. I am leaning more towards eco but i haven't made my final decision yet. Whatever it is, it is something geared towards business. Would that effect my dorm selection? </p>

Thanks again for your time =)

Dear ilovesugar,

Whatever your major is won't affect your dorm selection. There have been plenty of non engineering/science majors in slivka (there were some art majors there at a time..b/c the building rocks). Put down what you're interested in and you'll see what you get.

Allison is the most popular dorm on campus. All frosh and sophs are fighting for that dorm. Everyone wants to live there. It's a res hall that has a very appealing look and good room size. It has a dining hall in it, as well. I think it's a great dorm and had a guaranteed spot in it this year (was thinking of moving..but b/c or practicality reasons I decided to stay where I was). Don't know anyone who doesn't like Allison.

The only problem w/ Allison-not so clean bathrooms. But you'll manage.

What schools would you get locked into if you even mentioned it as a possibility?

I'm guessing you meant dorms.

Single-sex dorms and very unpopular dorms.

Haha yeah, it was late, sorry. Do you need to pick 5 choices on the app or just up to 5?
