Just About Music (JAM) and Risley

anyone know anything about these two particular dorms?

is Balch close to Helen Newman??? i am thinking about Balch...if i live in a single room...do you think i will also have chance knowing other ppl???
i am afraid i f i live in a single room will the resident hall is not social at alll...will i still make friends? or i shouldn't hae my own rooom?

http://www.cornell.edu/img/maps/large.pdf

is the housing choice a first come first serve basis?
im not sure if im ggoing to cornell yet, so should i just sign up now anyways?

The housing-assignments use a lottery, so i don't think it matters when you turn it in, as long as it's before May 1.

Mews hall seems pretty nice! I was looking at the map, and it seems that the engineering quad is crazy far from the North Campus residences. How does the bus system work? Is it pretty convenient for engineering students?

Also, when should I submit my housing app by?

As an engineer living in Mews....it can be a long walk, but it really isn't that bad. I mostly take the bus back at the end of the day when I'm kind of tired. The incoming freshmen class is lucky because construction on the main bridge SHOULD be done by then. For us, we had to take the detour bridge and the buses to north had to take a pretty annoying detour so it wasn't much faster to take a bus than it was to walk. But, supposedly the bridge should be finished, so the buses should be back to normal.

how long is the walk from north campus to the engineering quad if one did not rely on the bus?

sweetness! Is Mews nice, my knowledge is limited to what the website told me :D. It would be nice to have the opinion of an engineer living in Mews.

anyone know how to i apply for Balch and Single??

How are the townhouses? No one here seems to be considering them, but they look pretty sweet. I know they cost a little more, are like 300 meters further from everything, are somewhat isolated, and might not be fun if one of the four random people is psycho, but they do seem to have a lot of space and seem to be a pretty decent bargain and you can specifically request one. What do current students think of them?

are they owned by the university?

what about the dorms that most architecture students are in? it seems like this whole discussion is about ILR and engineering

yeah and what about the AG quad? i know i said i was interested in ILR but that was months ago and i actually applied to AEM. i'm assuming west campus dorms would be closest to the ag quad, so can anyone comment on one of those residences? just to be frank, i don't think i would prefer one of the 'housing initiative' dorms....you know, with the faculty members and all sharing it with you. basically, i'm interested in the party dorm lol. but look at me, im speaking as if i already got in haha.

I think people are getting confused about where everything is in Cornell. The classes, no matter what major or school you are in, are all on central campus. The dorms are either in North Campus, West Campus, or Collegetown. All freshmen live on North campus. Everyone else either lives on North, West, or Collegetown. So no matter where you live, you will not be right by your classes. North is closer to ag quad, architecture, hum ec, and arts quad. West is close to arts quad, architecture, maybe engineering. Collegetown is close to engineering, hotel, and ILR.

No matter where you live, the average walk to class is around 10-15 minutes. If you're going from Balch to Baker, maybe 5 min. If you're going from the townhouses to engineering, maybe 20 min so take a bus. But in general, you really don't need to take the busses. After all those meals in the dining halls, you're better walking them off.

If I want a specific dorm, is there a way to "fix" my housing application so I have a better shot at it? For example, my cousins told me that if I said I was "highly social" then I'd probably be placed in Donlon. What about the other dorms? I'm looking at Mews.

About the walk from Mews to Engineering Quad, when the bridge was open, it was about 20 minutes, 15 if you walk fast. I'm also a little slow in the mornings. I love Mews. For me it is the perfect setup. I have a "suite" where I only have to share a bathroom with 4 other girls, but I am also on a hall, so it was very easy to meet the rest of my hallmates. I also like the coedness (i.e. the suites are pretty much balanced guys and girls). I would definately say the "socialness" of the dorm is pretty dependent on who is on your hall. My very best friends at cornell pretty much all reside on my hall. We have been very close since the beginning and we are a tight knit group and many of us will be living together next year. Basically, my Mews experience has been awesome.

Yes, there isa way to get one of the newer dorms. Say you have some sort of disability. I said I had "dust allergies", which I do, so I'm pretty sure that's how I got placed in Mews because it has air-conditioning and is pretty clean.

Oh great, now everyone is going to write down dust allergies. I mean, I am allergic to dust mites, but I wouldn't have thought of writing that down.

ahaha, that's a great one. Well, you can come up with something creative, just think hard, you got into Cornell for a reason. And it's not like everyone goes on CC.
