Hi, I’m a parent of a '10. We were wondering if there are are any suites for freshman or other configurations of triples or quads. If there are, what dorms are they in? Or are there only doubles and the occasional single for freshman?

There are only doubles for freshmen. No suites, no singles.

Nope, just doubles. No singles, no suites.

The only exception is if you have some sort of disability and need a single. The way this usually works is that they'll give you a two-room double (you get your own room but have to walk through someone else's).

After freshman year, you can have a single, double, triple, suites of many different configurations...

Thank you both for responding. So it looks like doubles is it. What are your thoughts about meal plans. Do many people get and then really use the 20/week plan? It is hard to imagine that many students make it to breakfast on a regular basis. Also can you tell me something about the flex points? What and where can they be used and how useful are they? Thanks so much.

20 meals a week is great because even though you miss breakfast, you can spend your missed meals at different Brown eateries in the evening and lots of people go and hang out there.

flex points are used at the blue room, jo's, the gate, ivy room, and the little carts in libraries and other buildings. Flex points are basically extra money that you use if you're still hungry after having 3 meals, or if you go over the meal credit value (4.45) at jo's, gate, or ivy room.

Don't go less than 20 meals. You don't save enough money and it's too easy to spend a credit at Jo's or The Gate at night (both are open until 2am), or even the Ivy Room (open until 12).

Advice about meal plan is a little early, because they still haven't announced how they're going to change it for next year. It looks like it may be substantially revised.

I'd imagine if she is already aware of the 20 meal plan that this means the cards are already sent out for choice of plan and therefore, it probably is not as drastically changed as UCS wants to. If prices stay equal and any of the changes that were discussed happens, there are still not enough savings to justify the lower plans.

The information sent out to admitted students offers:

20 meals @3444 + 200 flex points
14 meals @3242 + 150 flex points
10 meals @2938 + 100 flex points
7 meals @2686 + 70 flex points

There are also 2 kosher meals plans (20 and 14) at higher rates than the standard meal plans.

Since this is all new to us, I don't know if this represents a substantial change from the plans that have been offered in the past.

how long are the flex points good for?

with the 20 meal plan, you get 100 at the start of first semester, all of which are good untill may, and at the start of 2nd semester you get another 100.

Oh... looks like they didn't change the meal plan as much as they had intended, then. That's kind of annoying that they announced it to incoming freshmen already, but didn't tell the current student body (or they did, and I completely missed it...)

they didn't announce it as much as they just sent out meal plan cards that correspond to the old numbers. maybe theyre still changing it?

There was an article about new block meal plans. They aren't listed above. It said more info will be released this summer.

RaboKarabekian seems to be correct about this. I called this morning and asked if the options sent to incoming freshamn were the set options for next year. The very nice woman told me that it is about 90% certain that there will be changes for next year, especially in terms of more flexibility. She said that the options are still being reviewed, but that I should probably expect some sort of update with more choices to come over the summer.

hey all. im on ucs, and specifically worked on the meal plan changes. 100% there will be changes for the fall.

the new meal plan will include the old plans, but also have plans at the same price ranges that are BLOCK plans, meaning you will have XXX number of meals for the entire year and you can use them whenever you want, howevery many a day you want, etc. also, you wil be able to swipe more than once, and meal credits will be worth $5.20.

the priciest block plan is the same price as the 20 meal/week, and equates roughly to about 14 meals/week, but instead of 200 flexpoints for the year, you get 450. its an amazing deal.

it's an amazing deal if you don't eat bfast at the ratty

so should we wait to send in the meal card?

letsgetin05 -- thank you SO much for that information!

Is there a block meal plan I can get that will average somewhere between 5-10 meals a week but won't cost me $11 per meal?

Thanks so much! --current Brown student who's incredibly frustrated with meal plan
