I’m a hopeful high school senior hoping to go to UA, I’ve already been accepted and awarded the Presidential scholarship(full tuition only I believe), but I’m wondering if there are any housing scholarships I can look into. I’m getting sorta desperate for some way to pay for that portion of my education. Can anyone please help me?

If it helps here is my GPA and test scores so far:
GPA: 3.5
ACT: 29
SAT(Critical reading and math): 1330

i have a question - how did you end up with the presidential scholarship? if i am not mistaken, those stats are ua scholar level, not presidential! : /

my DD

GPA - 4.15
ACT - 29

she has only been awarded collegiate level

Collegiate Scholar
An out-of-state first-time freshman student who meets the December 1st scholarship priority deadline, has a 28-29 ACT or 1250-1320 SAT score and at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA will be selected as a Collegiate Scholar and will receive $3,500 per year ($14,000 over four years).

UA Scholar
An out-of-state first time freshman student who meets the December 1st scholarship priority deadline, has a 30-31 ACT or 1330-1390 SAT score and at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA will be selected as a UA Scholar and will receive 2/3 tuition for four years.

Presidential Scholar
An out-of-state first-time freshman student who meets the December 1st scholarship priority deadline, has a 32-36 ACT or 1400-1600 SAT score and at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA will be selected as a Presidential Scholar and will receive the value of out-of-state tuition for four years.

^ saw that too…
on the housing scholarship note, what have been past experiences on other scholarships (alumni etc.) being awarded after the university-level awards… anyone?

Congrats on the Presidential (based on SAT score for in-state)

There aren’t any “housing scholarships” per se. The Nationally recognized scholars have housing in their packages. Some of the Fellows are awarded the Academic Elite scholarship which included housing.

Are you an “in-state” student? I’m guessing you are if you’re given the Presidential based on your 1330 SAT score:

In-state students who have a 30-36 ACT or 1330-1600 SAT (critical reading and mathematics scores only) and at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA will receive in-state tuition for four years.

What will be your major?

If you major in Engineering or Comp Sci, then you could get the following:

Engineering Scholarships In-State:

In-state Students who have a 30-36 ACT or 1330-1600 SAT (math and verbal scores only) and at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA will receive $2,500 per year for four years.

So, that would be an additional $2500 that could be used towards housing.

You do need to file a FAFSA after Jan 1. Even if your family’s EFC is too high, you would still qualify for a Stafford student loan for $5500 which would help with room and board costs.

How much can your family contribute towards your education?

*what is the total cost of UA tuition room and board plus the fees? *

Are you OOS?

The total COA amount that UA lists on the website includes the more expensive private room suites (see below). Many students pay less by choosing less expensive shared room dorms.

@ mom2collegekids: “What will be your major?” I plan to major in computer science but when I made my application I entered the wrong major and now cannot seem to find out how to change it since the application has been submitted and accepted already. When I tried to it told me I am unable to use that feature. Any Advice? I plan to contact the school this week and ask them directly.

@mom2collegekids: “How much can your family contribute towards your education?”

Not much, I’m in the Upward Bound TRIO program and in a low income family. According to one of our program counselors I should be eligible for the Pell Grant through the FAFSA.

Yes I am in state. Washington county to be exact.

I asked this question about a week ago for another student. I was told that the student needs to call 1-800-933-BAMA (2262) The office might be open tomorrow (Saturday) until around noon or so. Otherwise, you’ll have to call back on Monday.

when you call, you have to make sure that your scholarship app info gets changed, too. :)

We had to do this for DS2, but we did it while we were on campus one day last fall.

Ok…well…

You’ll get the $2500 a year that can be used towards housing. That’s good.

You’ll get your Pell. Will you qualify for anything else in the way of grants. I imagine that you’ll qualify for SMART for your junior and senior year (does anyone know?). **Have you talked to the FA office about what all you’ll get (in addition to your scholarships)? If not, you should. **

You will likely need to borrow some money to cover the stuff that your Pell and other aid won’t cover. Hopefully, you won’t have to borrow much each year. Can you work over the summer to earn some book money and spending money? You probably will also qualify for Work Study during the school year; that should give you some pocket money, gas money, and such.

Are there any local scholarships that you can apply for? Even small ones can help pay for textbooks. :)

Will you be coming into UA with any AP credits? If so, how many? If you can get classified as a sophomore in the summer (after AP credits get posted), you should be able to select the lower cost meal plan (you may have to call for this change). That can save you some money. :)

What kind of housing do you want?

On a different note…Have you applied to the Honors College?

Are you sure that UA allows this? I thought that the Freshman Experience Program was mandatory for all first year, first time students (how UA got around the problem of students entering as sophomores and juniors).

@worried student 10
UA also has the McNair and Coke Scholars programs that you may qualify for (the former is for juniors and seniors). As you probably know, UA also has TRIO-funded programs if needed. You will probably have to live in a less expensive dorm and have a roommate, but you are getting to go to college, which is something to be very proud of. Control your expenses and things should work out quite well. Roll Tide!!!

I know at least 2 “freshmen” that did this.

After their AP credits got credited (in July between senior year and freshman year), since they had 30 or more credits, their status changed to sophomore on MyBama. At that point, they called Bama Dining, and told them that they were sophomores and wanted the Bronze plan and they got their meal plans changed.

Now, I don’t know if Bama is going to close that loophole or not.

That is an interesting loophole for meal plans. I knew that class standing could be used to qualify for bigger student loans, but this is news to me. I know too that UA is working to add a space for expected graduation date on forms so those like myself and many others who are spending 4 years at UA, but are classified as sophomores, juniors, and even seniors.

Yeah my school doesn’t offer any AP classes period and I’m actually going to have to take remedial Calculus this summer at the local ASCC due to our school not covering much if any of that.

Currently working on the honors college application and plan to have it in monday. As for local stuff theres something called the J. L. Bedsole program that I am currently working on. I missed the coke scholarship deadline already. I actually plan to see about entering in a program one of my cousins is currently in which is a Co-op with one of the homeland security departments and I’ve been looking into the SMART scholars program from the DoD and the NSA Stokes Educational Scholarship Program. Also want to apply for this
Scholarships I believe its for 3500.

Theres a bunch of local ones I’m working on to. I think ill be the 7th person in my family to go to UA by this fall, but I don’t think I’m eligible for any of the alumni scholarships due because there all just older 1st cousins.

Actually do the alumni scholarships work with cousins or is it just parents and grandparents?

Oh and I was in the Rural Health Scholars program this summer at UA though i dunno if that will count towards more scholarships or not. Took Chem 104 and Intro to creative writing i think. Was like 7 credit hours but I think the Chem 104 was more of a medical chemistry class so I’m pretty sure it won’t count towards computer sciences but I’m still not 100% sure.

One more thing, just looked into the McNair scholarship and it certainly looks interesting and I thank you for telling me about it.
