Housing Scholarships?

Thanks, definitely going to be looking into that. Honestly I’m a little weary of community baths though.

^^^

What about a situation where one bathroom is shared by 2 rooms (with 2 kids in each)?

But…think about this…community bathrooms are cleaned every day. Bathrooms that are “en suite” are cleaned by (sometimes lazy) students.

Does anyone know…are the community bathrooms “private” - I mean, do the showers have closed stalls and closed dressing areas?

That wouldn’t be so bad I don’t think.

I’m late to this. But if you are an engineering major you will get an addition $2500/yr. Definitely keep calling them and make sure they know you intend to major in engineering. If you still don’t get anyway with them, shoot me a PM and I’ll see what I can do to help. I’m an ambassador to the college of engineering so I work with admissions every now and then.

In addition to RAs, we have the Residence Hall Association. It is a national organization at multiple universities. It is like a mini “SGA” for the residence halls. Anyway, if you are elected president of your hall/dorm then you get a free room. I think you also receive a little stipend too. Many students don’t know about RHA. They are instrumental in planning events throughout the campus. Often times, only one student runs for the president position so they win by default.

Ok thanks, but I’m doing computer science. Does that major get the 2500 to?

Yes, it does…Comp Sci is in the College of Engineering, therefore those who major in Engineering OR computer science get the extra $2500 per year. :)

One or two moms on this forum have kids in Comp Sci and were given the scholarship, so we know it includes comp sci majors.
so, YES!!!

Were you able to change your major???

Does anyone know how the community bathrooms are in the dorms that have them?

is there any privacy? Are there doors on the showers? Do people generally wear a robe or wrap a towel around themselves when going from shower back to their rooms?

I realize that some don’t care about privacy, but some kids do. So, I was wondering.

I noticed that some of the dorms that have community bathrooms also include a sink in each of the bedrooms (nice!).

Thanks, talked to two of my cousins that went/going UA one graduated chem eng and is going med school at UAB and the other is a junior in computer science. Talking with them helped a lot. Also yes I’m pretty sure my major was changed because when i submitted my honors college application it was already listed as my major on there.

That’s good your major was updated on the honors application. From all I know about other colleges and UA in general, I’d assume that the bathrooms in Burke, Paty, and other traditional dorms are quite private, as it’s not a public restroom in the same sense as one in an academic building. I’ve lived in a traditional dorm situation before, but it was not at UA. When you visit the dorms, check out the bathroom situation.

Couple questions:
NMF can’t live outside of the dorms and still get their housing money right?
And I put pre-med on my app, but I might do business. If I decide business, should I let them know. You go to the same school at first though right?

For NMF to get free housing, you must live in campus housing.

However, do you realize that Honors dorms (which are included in your NMF) are PRIVATE rooms? Each student has his OWN room - just like he’d have off-campus. Honors dorms are “apartment-style”. 4 PRIVATE bedrooms that share a living room, kitchenette and 2 bathrooms. So, by getting that for free, there’s no need to really move off campus.
You can change your major to business later if you want. You don’t apply to the B-school until soph year (others correct me if I’m wrong).

So, at this point, it really doesn’t matter what you put down for your major **UNLESS ** you wanted to major in Engineering or Computer Science. If you wanted those majors, you’d get an additional $2500 per year, and you’d have to have your major changed ASAP by calling 800-933-BAMA (2262).

I have a son who’s pre-med, and he’s double majoring in Chem Eng’g and Biology. Since he put down Engineering, he gets the extra $2500 per year on top of his other scholarship. If you double major, you can only list one major for scholarship purposes, so naturally he put down engineering.

Will you have a chance to visit the school? You’ll get an invite to Honors Capstone Day in January, but you can visit anytime.

jrt336,

All students are split up into the separate colleges based on major at the beginning, including Capstone Scholars Day and Bama Bound. Premed and premajor studies are handled by the College of Arts and Sciences. Call ASAP and have your major switched to business if you are intending on majoring in business. CBA (the College of Business) admits freshmen directly into its lower division program and once you take some required classes and have at least 60 credits, you apply for the upper division (really more of a formality) and declare your major(s). While there are some people who end up switching between colleges at UA, if you have any OOS transfer/dual enrollment credit, the individual colleges reserve the right to reevaluate the credit and give/take away transfer credit accordingly. Premed and business may have the same basic core requirements, but the classes one takes to fill these requirements are drastically different.

For the NMF housing scholarship, it can only be used on campus. The dorms we are recommending to worrriedstudent10 are because AFAIK, he will not be getting a housing scholarship and is concerned about the big price differential between the traditional dorms and the honors super suite housing, which the housing scholarship pays for.

SEA_Tide…

Don’t all honors kids get to go to the earlier Bama Bounds regardless of their majors?

Yes, we were trying to recommend less expensive on-campus housing for worriedstudent because his scholarships (so far) won’t cover the pricier Honors housing.

However, for you…jrt…with the NMF scholarship, your scholarship will cover the pricier honors housing.

Also, if you want to pay the price differential, you can pay extra to have the 1 room suite or the 2 room suite (still with private rooms, but fewer or no suitemates). That would be cheaper than moving off-campus and paying out-of-pocket.

Just curious… What’s going on in your head as you debate whether to major in business or in pre-med?

Will you be coming into college with lots of AP credits? UA is generous with AP credits, so that can create some flexiblitity with courses or decisions to double major or to have minors.

Well I’m not totally sure if I’d do pre-med or business at UA. Can I change it in like Feb. or March? And can you pick your honors college dorm?

Of course you can change your major in the spring

Yes, you can pick your honors dorm. The order of priority is based on deposits, but right now UA has a lot of honors dorms (about 6 buildings) and all of them have the “super suites” private rooms set up.

Not only do you get to pick your res hall, but you get to pick your suite and your actual room.

So first come first serve? I assume the new ones will be picked first. Unfortunately I don’t see myself making a decision for a long time-maybe March or April. So there’s really no rush to change my major even though SEA_tide said to do it ASAP?

Yes, the dorms are chosen first come, first serve by deposits. BTW…none of the honors dorms are old. They’ve all been built in the last several years. If you make a deposit around March, you should still have a good choice.

Am I missing where SEA_tide says you must change your major ASAP? I think he was implying that you should choose your major before Bama Bound in the summer. But, I may have missed something.

Yes, all honors students have the opportunity to attend earlier Bama Bound sessions. i was encouraging jrt336 to change to their desired major ASAP in the case of a possible departmental scholarship and because business majors are managed by a different UA college than premed. Going to Bama Bound as a declared premed who actually wants to do business would lead to the student being advised by a person who knows very little about business majors. It’s okay not to know your major or to change it later on, but right now two drastically different majors are being considered. If one of the majors was subject to the engineering core curriculum, it would be even more of a difference and potentially costly if a missed requirement took an extra semester. Depending on how many credits will be transferred in, a semester spent following a different track could involve taking a lot of unneeded classes.

If memory serves me correct, for priority choice in housing, submit the enrollment and housing deposits by March 1 or one will choose after non-honors.

* i was encouraging jrt336 to change to their desired major ASAP in the case of a possible departmental scholarship and because business majors are managed by a different UA college than premed. *

Ahhh…but I was told that students who have the NMF scholarship can ONLY also get the engineering scholarship, because other departments give their scholarships to those who don’t already have the big scholarships.

SEA_tide, do you know of any other departments (besides eng’g) that will give a NMF additional scholarships?

No I do not. That said, UA departments do send out e-mails and such to admitted students who have declared an interest in that department’s major. I forgot that jrt336 was NMF for a second but still stand by my recommendation to change your application major as soon as one is sure that they want to change it. Using scholarships as a reason was not correct in this case, but UA still has other major-specific programs. No matter what the two majors may be in a situation, it is better that UA knows which one you want.
