Housing Selection (returning student)

I am currently a freshman living in Hume, and this week I need to sign up for a dorm room for next year. I had a few questions about picking a room.

1)How does the sign up work, are rooms given out to whoever picks them first?
e.g. I can pick a regular room on Wednesday, so can I pick any regular room that has not already been taken?

2) If I sign up for a double room on Wednesday, when I am allowed to pick a double room(next week I think), can I then change my choice if there are double rooms available?

3) What is the difference between a suite and a single?

4) Do you have any recommendations as to where I should live next year? Anyplace that is fairly easy to get a single room?

Thanks for the help.

didn't you go through all this last year?

Last year it was different, all I did was fill out the paper with my preferences(Building, single/double/triple etc).

As a returning student it is done with an online system and the day you sign up depends on whether our staying in the same building, and what year you are, what type room you have/ what kind you want.

ask your RA. I didn't get housing for next semester....apt's here i come.

How did you like Hume, did you find it social or quiet with people studying all the time?

Yes, its first come first serve. The only problem is that freshmen are at the bottom of the totem pole. The only freshmen that have a real advantage at getting what they want live in Simpson, since Simpson is a freshmen only dorm (they are now considered displaced).

Yes, you can change after you pick a room.

3) What is the difference between a suite and a single?

[/quote]

Generally, a suite means that there is a sink and a wall separating the rooms (e.g Murphree/Fletcher/Keys). A single doesn't necessarily have to have that (e.g Buckman/Thomas singles have sinks, but Simpson/Graham/Fletcher single doesn't)

The only places with a lot of singles are Thomas and Buckman, but other dorms do have 1-3 singles but they are very hard to get. Everywhere else you are sharing a room with someone. I would recommend Keys, Murphree, and Fletcher. Getting a suite for 2 in Murphree would be like having a single. You can move in early and claim the back room. Plus there is a door separating both rooms.

Thanks for the reply.
I ended up signing up for a two person suite in Murphree last week.

I go to pick so soon because I live in Hume, so I also got listed as displaced.

I was surprised that two person suites on the ground floor of murphree cost $200 more a semester than the ones on the fourth floor. I guess they are a little bit bigger b/c they have a bay window.

About how I like Hume,
It is pretty nice. The rooms are much nicer than the other dorms, like my friends in simpson across the street.

There are some people that are really social, always in the common area or in someone elses room, others stay in their room alot, and others that are out at friends places or with their frats/sororities.

So at Hume you can meet people but still get work done when you need to.

One thing about it is that you don't really see anyone that doesn't live on your have of the floor. When I heard some of my friends from high school were living in Hume I figured I would see them alot, but hume is divided into two buildings, there are 5 floors per building and 2 sides per floor(except the ground floor) so in all there are 18 different sections really.

If I had to do it again, I would choose Hume again without a second thought.

Are you sure that it wasnt a double. There are 1 or two double that are located on the 4th floor but not always and they are less than suites for two. But there are definitely suites for two on the 4th floor if you wanted to move to the 4th. So what section did you decide to live in.

**I forgot Hume has its own lottery system, so some (all?) students are considered displaced.

Yeah, Hume has a mini lottery for people that want to live there a second year. I did not enter the mini lotto, and I got a letter saying that I would qualify as a displaced student. I assume those who entered the Hume mini lottery and didn't get a spot were also considered displaced.

I guess that is one of the perks of the honors program, priority at one of the nicest dorms freshman year(hume) and priority in choosing your dorm for sophomore year. the only people with higher priority than displaced students are those living in the same building next year.

I am in section F on the fourth floor, it says "Type: Two Person Suite".
The rent is $2033 a semester.
Looking at a three person suite on the first floor, the price is also $2033 a semester, but the room is essentially the same as mine w/ an extra person in it.
There is only one two person suite listed on the first floor, and its price is $2220 a semester.
For the F section I only see three rooms listed on the first floor, none and the second or third(I think they are female floors) and four on the fourth. Does that mean the fourth room on the ground floor is a single?

Also for anyone interested, the price of a double room on the fourth floor is $1993.( I don't see any first floor double rooms)

I think I read in another thread that the second floor has a kitchen, anyone know for sure?

More like a technicality. Both Hume and Simpson people are considered displaced, but I agree it sure is a great benefit.

That means that they are going to turn that room in a suite for 3. Which is basically a suite for 2 with 3 people. I really dont recommend them.

Those are the rooms you classically think of when someone mentions a Murphree room.

For each section, guys are on the 1st and 4th and girls on 2nd and 3rd. There are some exceptions in H and J.

Also (not sure if you care) but the view is different for different sections. A, B, and M face the stadium. J, K, L face the racket club/gym. C and D face university ave..

The 4th room is the RA's room.

Yeah, the kitchen/lounge is on the 2nd floor in all sections.

Yeah, I went by and looked at it last night, the view isn't really a big deal to me.

Also, when you say they are going to turn a room into a a suite for three you mean the room on the first floor, not that they are going to change the one I am in into a 3 person room right?

Does anyone know about the three person suites in Fletcher?

Main room door into living room area. Three separate rooms inside with individual keys for each.

Ignore what I said there. Not completely correct.

Does that mean that UF is charging $2033 for double rooms for Fall 2008? That's so much more than I remember it being...

This applies to murphree
1. Some suites for 2 are $2033 and others $2220
2. Suites for 3 are $2033
3. Doubles are $1990

The rooms at murphree are a little more expensive because in 2005 it was renovated. the renovation was/is being funded by a rent increase at murphree.
